Haha, yeah that is true! Acordding to the CDC, like you said, 1 in 4 women have genital herpes and 1 in 5 men have it. I think most people don't realize how common it really is!

No, actrually it's true. 80% of all 3 yr olds have it from adults kissing them and spittling on them......So herpes is just no big deal. Would you eliminate a person because they had cold sores? Well, genital herpes is a little cold sore in the perianal area. Big deal. In the 80, newspapers and magazines made a big deal of it, but herpes is an ancient virus, around forever. And as far a gential herpes (You can have oral herpes in the genital area) most people have 3-6 outbreaks in any 10 year period. Drug companies would love to rile you up so you take their med for the rest of your life (How very sweet and profitable for them... then comes the disclaimer than you could still spread the virus even if you are not having an outbreak...most doctors don't believe that part, but, hey, gets them off the hook, and they sell you a "forever" script!!!!!!) Even if you do get genital herpes, it's still no big deal. Does a cold sore ruin your life??? It IS a big deal, however if a woman is going to deliver a child during an outbreak -- exposure to mucus membranes of the baby causes some nasty neurological problem. Ususally a C-section is then performed.... It used to be that dentists had herpes lesions on their fingers -- before all dentists wore gloves. If you want to panic about an STD worry about AIDS or HIV, or Syph. Herpes? an inconvenience...... But if you are thinking of eliminating a really great partner because of herpes, it's about as important as dandruff. Even if you get it, it won't kill you, it's just an inconvenience. And many people have the virus and don't even know it.... women often infect themselves by moistening a tampon with saliva, forgetting they had a cold sore.... all the tv hype is to sell you a drug, and anyone in the business knows that drug companys are whores.....
Condoms won't protest the skin that is not covered. Do some reading on Webmd
In my looonnnngggg life, I have known of only two peopel who had a herpes infection worth taking meds for -- each of these people had a constant cold sore on the lip, always in the same place and it had occurred so often the lip had a scar when it didn't have a cold sore. For sure, each of these two people might have benefitted from medication. Anyone else? ridiculous.

There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both virus types can cause sores around the mouth (herpes labialis) and on the genitals (genital herpes). Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Cold sores sometimes called fever blisters, are groups of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. The skin around the blisters is often red, swollen, and sore. The blisters may break open, leak a clear fluid, and then scab over after a few days. They usually heal in several days to 2 weeks.
The herpes simplex virus usually enters the body through a break in the skin around or inside the mouth. It is usually spread when a person touches a cold sore or touches infected fluid—such as from sharing eating utensils or razors, kissing an infected person, or touching that person's saliva. A parent who has a cold sore often spreads the infection to his or her child in this way. Cold sores can also be spread to other areas of the body.

Well, coldsores are actually herpes too. There are more than one form.
Sounds like your doctor is trying to scare you, but safe sex is the best practice regardless.

I would as sum that your doctor is correct. they have nothing to gain by lying to you. Unless you have went through the years of college they have to learn about this stuff play it safe. You shouldn't be messing around with more than your spouse anyway.
