Considered a peasant's meal in Italy for centuries, modern pizza is attributed to baker Raffaele Esposito of Napoli (Naples) in the Italian region of Campania. In 1889, Esposito of Pizzeria di Pietro (now called Pizzeria Brandi) baked pizza especially for the visit of Italian King Umberto I and Queen Margherita. It was red white and green.

It was around the time Italy unified as a country in the late 1800's. The first pizza was made to look like the new Italian flag: Red, White, and Green. It was a rectangle with red sauce on one third, white cheese on another, and green pepper on the rest. Eventually it was all mixed together, and it was in Naples that it was first made round.

Piza or pissa is late Vulgar Latin (9th century) flat bread, and apparently came to mean a flat bread with a cheese topping by the 14th century in some Italian dialects.
