I don't think you can really pose the question like that. While some people may not like dogs, or perhaps your dog, you can't
cast a blanket over every one who has an issue with a particular pooch. It has to on a case by case basis.
Example: My buddy has a large pit bull, he is very friendly and good with kids. This dog I do not have any fear of at all. I love the dog and will dog sit for him. And I am not a dog owner by the way.
The folks who live in the house behind us have a mixed breed dog that weighs about 40 pounds. That mutt is absolutely insane, this dog barks and snaps at everyone outside of their family. I fear that my kids will be bitten by this dog if he gets loose and unsuspecting kids approach it. I can only hope the dog gets pegged by a truck or car before biting someone. The owners by the way have accepted that the dog is nuts. I asked to have the neighbors introduce me to the dog so he would not constantly bark at me while I am in the back yard. They did not want to because they said he is just is not good with people outside the family. Make no mistake this dog WOULD harm you if you got close to it. I HATE this dog.
Dogs like people have to be given a chance to show where they stand before you pass judgment on them.

Personally I am not scared of dogs, but I am also cautious of certain types of dogs that are known to be bitey.
I have heard many people say their dog is harmless, and the next minute, the dog snaps at the stranger. Some seemingly nonviolent dogs have attacked people brutally and their owners have no idea why.
You can't blame people for being scared just like you can't blame some dogs for being protective of their owners. but some are trained to be aggresive, so you never know what can happen.

really ? you can't be serious ! do you not watch the news or read a news paper ? why don't you do a little research on this subject.
my uncle is in wildlife management in south Carolina. the most horrible and disgusting call he had ever went on was when great danes, not even mean dogs, had attacked torn a little girl in unrecognizable pieces. shredded her, literally.
how about the woman who was killed in the hallway of her own apt. by the neighbors pit bulls.?
how about the woman who had to have a face transplant because a dog literally ripped her face off?
dogs do attack for no real reasons sometimes. just type in dog attacks in yahoo and educate yourself.
you sound like a young immature person when you say " they don't do harm to them " grow up ! every like creature on this planet does harm to another in one way or another.
and for jimmer , the first answer, spiders do bite.

Do you mean eating them or just in general?
Children should be brought up not to approach dogs which they don't know. Always ask the owner if the dog is safe to pet. Never touch a strange dog on it's rump. Always approach from the front and avoid a confrontational eye contact.
Food! When I was In Hong Kong, the president of the Hong Kong Society for Animal protection was forced to resign after saying that instead of banning the killing of dogs for food, it should be legalised. That way one could legislate about the methods of slaughter.
Working in a hostel for asylum seekers, a man who worked in the office block next door regularly brought his little Shiatsu onto our recreation to defecate in the morning. At the time we had asylum seekers from China and I was very tempted to ask one of them to go out early one morning and say to the offending owner, 'Ah, breakfast.'
Dogs evolved from wolves and if not properly controlled are extremely dangerous. People forget this.

In most cases it is because they had a frightening experience with a dog in childhood, or else they had a parent who had such an experience who by being over protective instilled a fear of these wonderful animals in the person. It's the people who are the problem, not the dogs!

1) What does this have to do with vegetarianism?
2) What do you mean, "they don't do any harm to them?" People are bitten by dogs every day and every now and then someone gets mauled to death by a dog.
I don't happen to be afraid of dogs... I'm far more afraid of some dog owners since dogs pretty much have to be provoked, desperate or *trained* to hurt people.

Well, since this is in the vegetarian section I guess they aren't afraid that the dog will attack them because they ate their friend, the dog next door.
Perhaps they read the news about pit bulls killing children, or they had a run-in with a not so nice dog when they were little, or they are not used to dogs and have an unsubstantiated fear.

First off, I think you mis-categorized this. =) Second, i'm scared of most bigger dogs, because I was bit by one when I was smaller. My dad and I were taking a walk in our neighborhood just minding our own business and one ran out of his yard and just bit me on the arm. I went through a lot of trauma and stress after that and from then on i've just been scared of them. My sister has a Great Dane, and it took me a long time to get to where I am with her today. I have a Shih Tzu myself, which i'm fine with small dogs. =)

They won't harm people unless they are threatened in some way but dogs have attacked people and most were for unknown reasons.
I guess people are just weary when it comes to dogs not their own for fear of being bit, it's natural to feel that way.
