The tilt test is more for determining the response time and degree of the case in the blood pressure drop when the patient is moved to another position.

This very same effect is what happens when you hear someone say that they stood up to fast and got light headed.

Basically the heart does not react to the pressure change as fast as the body needs and therefore you experience a decrease in blood flow to the brain.

I had this done to confirm my diagnosis of neurogenic cardiodepressive syncope. It involved having an arterial line and an EKG while they tilted me up to monitor my vital signs. If after 20 minutues, there is no loss of conciousness, they deliver a dose of epinephrine (I think) to stimulate the heart and see if that produces the symptoms in the standing position.

I had a positive test (heart rate and blood pressure dropped after standing for 15 minutes as I lost consciousness).
