Depends on your definition of "safe".

If you mean, can the other person not get it? Then the answer is a big NO! Genital herpes can be spread whether the person is having an outbreak or not. I personally contracted genital herpes from a guy who was not having an outbreak or showing any signs of the virus. My fiance (boyfriend at the time) got genital herpes from me about 2 months into our relationship. I hadn't had an outbreak in almost 2 years! According to Valtrex, 70% of people with genital herpes got it from their partner when they were showing no signs or symptoms of the virus.

You can make it safe by using certain precautions. ALWAYS use condoms! Also, Vatrex is the ONLY medication for genital herpes proven to help prevent the spread of genital herpes. There is other medication available for genital herpes, but they are not proven to help prevent the spread of it. Using condoms and Valtrex is still not 100% safe though. Only abstinence is.

There are couples out there who have been together for 10 or more years. One person has the virus, the other does not. It is possible to not spread it, you just have to take special precautions doing so. Good luck!

Check with your doctor and the pharmacy about various effective medications to manage breakouts. Be honest with your partner and use condoms consistently. Understand that you may be able to pass it on without having symptoms or an outbreak, but with effective medications and the use of condoms, the risk is minimal.

Should you get pregnant, ask to speak to a teratologist, who specializes in birth defects. With herpes, you may have a child but will need medication and a C-section to prevent infection to the baby. The doctor will monitor you closely. Blindness may occur in an exposed fetus.

There may be support groups in your area. Try contacting them and don't be embarassed. It is just one of those things. Be careful; you may be at higher risk for HIV if you are not sensible about condom use from now on. See a naturopath and get a second opinion and research the Internet. The more info, the better

Some would say yes others no. In my opinion if I was with someone that had Herpes 2 (or any other STD) I would make him wear a condom period no questions asked until he was cleared by a doctor. But that is me. i don't want to take chances with my health and if you care about someone why expose them unnecessarily?

Define safe? Having sex is never 100% safe, depending on what kind of things you're worried about.

Herpes can still be transmitted to another person even when you are not having an attack.

Protection is still required even when herpes appears "dormant."
