Buy him the book I recommend below. It might be a life saver. The other stuff ain't too bad either. Have him email me or visit my little website and I'll back up how well this works.
For type I and type II diabetics (and those who are overweight and could potentially become diabetic). Copy and bookmark the webpages I‘ve listed below… they are invaluable for those with diabetes and/or weight problems...
I've found a wonderful book that will help you control your diabetes and minimize or even eliminate the complications. Some folks who became diabetic due to poor diet and obesity are effectively cured by following the advice in this book. I'm a type II (inherited), but it helps all types, especially those who became diabetic due to poor eating habits. It's by an author who has really done his homework, Patrick Quillin, Phd. It's called, "The Diabetes Improvement Program". I have tried his suggestions and found them to be very helpful. I have no complications whatsoever and my blood sugar levels are quite stable. Yes, I still have to take Metformin (Glucophage) daily, but it's the minimum dosage (500mg) and I only have to take it twice a day. I have been off Metformin for as much as a week, but this was with vigorous exercise. Many, what I call, non-hereditary type IIs (those that don't have a close relative who had it) have gotten off medication completely, just with diet, exercise, and supplements. So, in some instances, it most certainly can be 'effectively' cured. Read more about it here:
http://www.diabetesimprovement.com/
The book explains what's going on in our system and what to do about it. It's really easy and inexpensive. It's basically diet, supplements, and exercise. For example, did you know that cinnamon helps blood sugar absorption? It also controls cholesterol and triglycerides. This is according to the USDA:

For men: Are you suffering from erectile dysfunction? I was. Yes, WAS. Now that everything's under control, I'm able to have nearly normal sex again. I've also put together a little webpage highlighting some of the things I've learned here:

Over weight high blood pressure and have diabetes are very bad. You dad must take control of his diet. If you can find a Indian shop near you. Buy a vegetable call karela ( or pavakka in English it's called bitter gor) wash and cut into pieces.Liquidize it. Take 1 or 2 table spoon twice a week. Must not take it every day as this vegetable brings the sugar level down quickly. It is a very bitter. Do not add sugar at all. Go into www.ayurvedic for more information on medicine and food for diabetes. Ayurvedic medicine is from India.
Also your dad must not eat belly full and he must eat his last meal for the day by 7 pm. Plan yogurt vegetables any fruits which is not sugary are good too.

I'm a 45 year old woman and was recently diagnosed as being a borderline diabetic. My doctor prescribed some medication, but before filling it I decided to do some research on the internet which led me to the methods. After reading this ebook and applying the methods, my scepticism turned to 100% belief. I noticed that my energy levels increased significantly and I felt more rested in the morning, my symptoms started going away.
I am very happy to tell you that I have been feeling better than I have felt in years and my doctor informed me that he will be taking me off my prescriptions if I keep this up.
I recommend you use the Type 2 Diabetes Destroyer to naturally reverse your diabetes.

First of all, as a new diabetic your Dad (and you can help) needs to speak to a diabetes educator and a nutritionist to discuss his dietary changes. He needs to eat small, frequent high protein, low carbohydrate meals. Fruits, fruit juices, candy and soda, etc are hight in carbohydrates. Starchy veggies like corn, potatos, etc. are also to be eaten in small doses, since starch is converted to sugar by the body. Since he is already overweight (probably obese) he needs to cut back on fats as well. He needs to exercise, even if it's just walking. If he smokes he needs to quit. Finally, he needs to take his diabetes medication daily, whether it's insulin or oral medicine. He also needs to get a glucometer and a little pad and start measuring his blood sugar levels at regular intervals throughout the day until he gets his blood glucose levels under control. 190 is high, but not horrible. I have seen people walking around with levels in the 300's on a regular basis. Blood sugar levels over 400 can be deadly, very quickly. Here are some links, contact the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Weight watchers has some very good cookbooks which have the ADA conversion for servings in them.
Finally, if you dad is overweight and diabetic, that means that everyone in your family (you and your brothers and sisters) are at a higher risk for developing diabetes as well. (especially if you are overweight yourself) If you all start eating healthy, it will be easier for him to maintain his diet. Get the junk food out of the house.

I am diabetic and insulin dependent so this is from the horse mouth:
Your family needs to do the following:
1. Make sure your dad has regular exercise
2. He has to be on a diet, consulting a professional will be of big help.
3. Lessen carbo intake
4. Eat in portions and not swallow the entire cow in one sitting
5. Build up his will power to say no to sudden urges.
It does not mean that your dad has to abstain from the good things in life. I do treat myself once in a while with a small slice of cake. From now on everything must be done in moderation.
There are lots of support groups on the web. The ADA is one of them.
Take the time to study this illness and not be dependent on what your doctors tell you. Do not be afraid to ask them questions.
In the end, it's just a change of lifestyle for your dad and this will not kill him.

He should avoid all foods which easily break down to simple sugars. These are mainly simple carbohydrates such as white breads, white rice, potatoes, sugar, corn syrup (read the labels), sodas (diet is ok), sweets, cookies, potato chips, corn chips....
He should eat complex carbs including grains, whole wheat, brown rice, fibrous vegetables, etc..
60% of diabetes control is diet and weight loss (and exercise). The rest is through medication.
He should eat smaller portions - 5 small ones instead of 3 heavy ones. Never eat before bedtime. Avoid fast food and high-fat/cholesterol foods. Eat more chicken and fish.
He also should try to get in 30 minutes of aerobic exercise at least several days out of the week.

You should really talk to a nutritionist. His doctor can recommend one. There's tons of books and websites out there dealing with the subject. Don't just assume certain foods are good for him because they're healthy. Like carrots and corn metabolize as sugar, so eating too much won't help with diabetes or weight loss. Wanting to help and support your Dad is great, don't be discouraged, just research it and educate your Dad about it as much as possible. The doctor should have a "starter" diet to get you going. Good luck
