Are they going insane? No...j/k. But yeah...why? They don't eat, breathe, live, work like WE, the animals and humans do.

Truthfully, they do eat, breathe, and live(perhaps not like we do, but they do it just the same). I assume you are talking about fruititarians, e.g. someone who only eats food that does not involve killing of any sort much like fruit fallen from the plant. This would not include vegetables like potatoes because you have to kill them(uproot them) to eat them. If someone has that particular view(which they are entitled to) they run very high risks of health problems due to malnutrition. Plants do breath carbon monoxide, they eat simple sugars that they themselves synthesize from nutrients and proteins in the soil, and they are living creatures in the sense that they are able to die. As for feeling...there is no way to tell if plants feel, whether like us or at all, but I believe it is safe to assume that they don't. Some people want to believe that all living creatures feel, but I believe it is a product of self awareness due to complex life structures like brains...the more complex the more self aware. I could be wrong, but there is no real information that can prove either way if I am right or not...at this point it is all speculation...high and low it is just my opinion.

B/c they're ignorant. Plants do not have nerve endings like animals do. They do not feel pain. And I wish meat eaters would try to come up with another argument other than "plants are living creatures too" b/c the main point of being a vegetarian is to reduce suffering in this world. This not only applies to animals but to third world countries who have countless numbers of starving ppl due to gluttonous North Americans who feel it's okay to destroy the rainforest and waste tonnes of grain to produce pathetic amounts of meat.

PS - the person who wrote:
"Good God....do all you vegan idiots think alike? There is NO scientific proof that plants feel, or ghosts exists or UFO's are real, people. Go eat some tree bark and quit ruining our lives." If he would've read the question properly, he would've realised that meat-eaters are the ones who like to inform vegetarians that plants have feelings too. Who's the "idiot" now? And how do you know you're not ruining MY life by calling me an idiot and telling me to eat tree bark when I've done nothing to you?

If they really believe that, they are either very misled or are actually insane. More often, I think people make claims like this to try and show that there is no point to vegetarianism. The claim being that if veggies can suffer too, a vegetarian is causing as much suffering as a meat eater. There's no factual basis plants feeling pain. Think about it. Why do animals (incl. humans) feel pain? In order to avoid sources of harm. Whether you believe in evolution or creationism, you can see that there is good reason for animals to feel pain. Plants have no means of avoiding harm, so there would be no point in god allowing them to suffer or for a nervous system to evolve in them.

CowboyBil...: why would a vegan say that plants feel pain? if plants do feel pain, that would be a reason not to be a vegan. Try to think before you answer, and especially try to think before calling other people idiots.

Well they do live and eat but not like animals and humans do.
So what will we eat if everything that's organic feels?
People tell me the same thing just because Im a vegetarian and believe that animals shouldn't be slaughtered...as if I will also stop eating vegetables, fruits and so on.

I've heard that and my reply is: An apple falling from a tree is no different than a hair falling from my head. No pain is felt to either the apple, the tree, the hair or my head.

My best advice is not to engage these people at all. They are just trying to push your veggie buttons.

Strange!!!! I have never heard that. If this is a vegetarian question then they may be refering to eating animals but that person fails to realize that all veggies and fruits and animals breathe and live. God told us to eat them.

It's all about situational ethics. You choose to believe that plants have no "feelings" although it is a scientifically proven fact. So justify your consumption of those items by saying that is not the same as animals. What's most important is justifying what you do to yourself regardless of what it means in reality. If it feels good-do it.

I hate when people say that. It's ridiculous and they know it. They say it to wind us up, and I don't understand why when all we're trying to do is make the world a nicer place.
