It seems everywhere you read these days the police are botching up crime scenes and tainting the evidence or forgetting to read the criminal his rights. An yet on these critical errors the child molestors, rapist, and murderers get off.An then sometimes the police does their job and judge lets the person go.An 100's of thousand dna kits sit at the crime lab untouched. My friend was brutally raped and killed in 1997. Do you know they still dont have any leads! The person took her clothes . Left her nude in a ditch .they have dna from her and him. But it seems like once a year they could run the dna through the system just to check if that person had committed a crime again.Wheres the cold case squad when you need them? The president can send 140,000 troops to Iraq and scare us all to death about terrorism . But is he blind to what is going on in his own nation?Sorry just a little venting there.

Which police force? Are you grouping all law enforcement into one hole? I read 3 differant newspapers from 2 states daily and Rarely read about botched crime scenes and tainted evidence. Why don't you become a police office and then you will see how bad there hands are tied when trying to investigate a crime.

I had a 15 year old cousin raped and murdered in 1991. The only way the 16 year old scum bag was caught was because he bragged about what he done to her. There was no evidence to go on until then and they found some of her clothes and physical evidence in his car under the seat that he missed when cleaning up

I hear your frustration. It is so sad about your friend and other women hurt by these monsters. The truth? This sounds like a serial killer or serial rapist turned killer. These people are hard to catch because they choose strangers as victims.

For your friend to be left exposed that way is a statement made by the killer. This one has probably killed before. Almost always it is a male. And they often are good at no leaving evidence.

This is the hardest crime to solve for the police because there is often no connection to the victim. Part of the problem is that we see these crimes solved on CSI in an hour. But these things can take years until all the pieces come together.

I agree with you on running the DNA through once per year. It is a lot cheaper now. Also, in a lot of jurisdictions, they take DNA from people who are arrested for felonies, so they could add this monster to the database at anytime.

Keep talking about it. Get involved. Good luck.

To answer your question as best I can from my perspective. Most police depts are understaffed and underpaid. Plus under trained. Where I work it takes 3 months to get test results on drugs and up to six months to get fingerprint results back from the lab. In many cases we arrest the same person over and over, and they post bond and are out of jail before we can do the paper work required. It takes almost two hours to do the reports on one DWI arrest. Then the Judge gives them more probation and away they go till the next time. As for reading them their rights that is only required if we are going to question them and use their answers in court. Otherwise I am not required to read Miranda rights to them. Not one officer in the county I work has a DNA kit, some do not have fingerprint kits, and none have specialized training in rape investigation. Still in most cases the charges are dropped by the court before the trial without regard to what evidence we have, frequently because the case comes to trial before we get our evidence back from the lab.

Let me crawl up on my soapbox again. Your interpretation of "botching" a crime scene. Do you have some evidence of this? More than likely it was published on the local news station or newspaper. These are "for profit" industries and guess what? Headlines like "Police Botch Crime Scene" sells millions of papers and increases the value of commercial time. People like dirt and it catches their attention. You have evidence of a problematic crime scene then I suggest you go to the prosecutor. If you are NOT a crime scene tech, I ask you to speak your expert knowledge and how you interpret scenes to make such a statement. I'll step back down.

Security Forces and OSI are the USAF equivalents to being a cop. As far as being a computer tech ... 3C0X2 would be an appropriate AFSC but there are other career fields that deal heavily with computer systems. as for getting a job after you get out of the USAF ... by that point you would have earned your CCAF degree (an Associates degree related to your career field) and 4-6 years job experience ... this would deffinately help you get a job. Although if you want a job as a programmer you may need to accomplish a bachelor's degree anyway... But the GI Bill would cover that.

you go girl, vent away. This system we call justice is flawed in many ways, there are so many people who just sometimes drop the ball, when someone is holding there end up, someone just ends up letting them down. I hope someday that your friend and you find peace and justice, be patient. I think though to answer your question, that there are a lot of hard working individuals in all aspects of the law and legal system, unfortunately there are also those that have lost their passion for their job and lost sight of why they wanted to pursue their occupation. I can only hope that someone who still has the passion and fire to find justice will find your case and find a resolution for you and your friends family. Good luck and keep your chin up. :)

I do think that the police officers should be retrained!!! allot of them I think are just spent, they work to hard. But at the same time I don't think they need to go up to a bunch of kids with there guns drawn that were shooting off fire works.

Absolutely! Cops have so much authority that is made worse when they join forces and cover for each other.

That is why I, for one, don't always feel they need memorials when killed on duty. Not after their personnel records have been explored for possible citizens complaints
