No-one knows. The cosmologists are doing a good job of nailing down exactly what needs to be explained, and the fact that particles DO just spontaneously pop into being opens up the possibilities considerably. But we have a long way to go in answering this question.

Sadly, you'll hear from a bunch of arrogant people who are certain that they already know the answer.

I think about this often. I can't fathom the notion that it JUST happened. That in the huge vastness of space (being nothing, not even air) that 2 tiny atoms came into being and banged into each other and thus starting life. This space is massively enormous. First, where did these 2 atoms originate from and how long did they float around before meeting each other? and mathmatically what would be the chances of them ever meeting? I choose to believe that there is a great power, force, spirit, something that made it all. I for sure don't know what this force is but with my upbringing and studied, I choose to believe it is God. Well knowing that the word 'God' isn't the name He gave us. 'God' is the English version of YHVH - I AM. I have tons of questions and probably will never have answers but I am comfortable with the notion that God created it all. Even before our known universe came into being, what was there out there? Was God just all alone and thought of doing something creative one day? Was these other things the existed before this universe? It's an amazing thing to think about and thinking is all we can do. We may never know it but I live with my faith and that's good enough for me.

The only explanation which makes sense is that it is the result of a random uncaused event. The universe we're familiar with may be only one of an infinite number of infinitely variable universes which all exist at random and uncaused.

Of course this world is created in a specific way rather than a different way. Hence it needs one to specify it to create it.

God created it and specified it to be this way.

It does not make sense to say that the world expands and compresses without a beginning and without an end because this world has signs that clearly show it must be created - so it must have a beginning.
