My husband had to pay a debt off with Abbey. He does not have any Debit or Credit cards. He told them that he would be able to pay them with my card when the money had been transferred.
Phones them up two days later to pay but they won't let him. They want verification from ME that he can use my card. I return from my jaunt and he rings them again. Hands the phone to me. Lady says “Is it ok for your husband to pay this bill with your card?" I say Yes and she says Ok, can you give me the number?
I say “IS that it?" she says yes.. I say "but I could be the cleaner!” She says “sorry but if any money is taken off your card illegally we have to be able to prove that we asked you. I said "BUT I COULD BE THE CLEANER!!!"
Anyway,it got paid, but I can't understand why they would take the word of an anonymous voice on the end of a phone when they wouldn't take my husbands word for it.. who let's be honest.. was just ANOTHER anonymous voice on a phone.
Have you come across nonsense like this?

Some of the shite these banks come out with really IS amazing. Sometime ago I asked my bank for another card on my account so that whilst I was house-bound for a few weeks following an operation somebody else could get me some cash out of an ATM and do a bit of shopping if I needed anything. I'd been with that bank for many many years, but the performance they wanted to go through - even to the extent of wanting me to give power of attorney to somebody ---- and Christ knows what else was so annoying that I told them to stuff it and got on to one of my credit card companies. I explained the situation to them - and a new card, made out to the person I had named, was delivered to me THE NEXT MORNING!!! Incidentally, that same cc company phones me if ever I make what seems an 'odd' transaction (usually by ordering goods over the phone), yet my own bank shows no interest, so neither do I, in them any longer!

It is absolute nonsense, you are right, but is the current minimum legal requirement to show that the bank was acting responsible. As If!

the same with the pin code we had to add to verify a card at the check-out. That is nonsense, in fact it is less secure than the old system and banks know it.

All the Banks are doing fulfilling the minimum legal requirement

Well, not really the same sort of thing but it was nonsense all the same.
Sky offered me 3 months half price but because my direct debit was taken out on the 10th, not the 1st, the offer of the 3 months ran out short of the third payment so i only got two months half price! I tried to explain that 3 months is 3 months and 3 months is 3 payments but i got nowhere because i was talking to an ignorant muppet who obviously hated his job as much as i hate ignorant call centre workers!

I work within an industry where I take telephone payments on a regular basis, we do unfortunately have to speak to the named card holder but it is a case of believing who-ever is on the end of the phone, as the person you spoke to advised it is a case of proving that the company taking the money took reasonable steps to ensure it is the card holder speaking, in your case it is literally just speaking to a woman as the card-holder was female. You would probably have been asked "are you the person named on the card?" if you answered yes and you are not then thats fraud... Its called data protection and is put in place to protect the general public against fraud.

That is preposterous if they did not ask you security questions.Common questions are mothers maiden name or your SS#(assuming you're inthe US).I would cancel this card and get one with better security options because they just proved to you that ANYONE can use the card as long as they say they are you.I know this kind of thing happens, but I would never tolerate it.All of the creditors I use go through a gammit of security questions before letting me use my card by phone. Most are not conserned if it's mail order and being shipped to the billing address.

all the time

how about chip & pin, how much nonsense is that then. someone mugs me, threatens me with violence if i dont give them the correct pin, which they can immediately verify at a cash point. then they go shopping and chip & pin it. in the old days they would have to learn to forge my signature which would take some practice giving me time to cancel the card.
my wife goes shopping with my cards all the time and just uses the chip & pin to pay. easier for us...but SO open to abuse.

All too often, I'm afraid. My wife and I have a joint business account, but because she is the one who opened the account, she is deemed to be the account holder.
They often telephone and ask to speak to her, if she is out I ask if I can help but they decline the offer, saying they have to talk to the account holder. All they want sell her another product or promote another service. Mad, and a total waste of time. Most aggravating.
