Technically, a nautical mile is a minute of arc along a meridian of the earth - so technically, a nautical mile varies depending on where on earth you are.

However, this would make navigation at sea a tricky business, so it has an international standard definition : 1 nautical mile = 1852 metres exactly.

A land mile is an imperial measure, and is equal to 1,609.344 metres.

It is sort of like if you have an orange and you take a pen and mark two distinct points anywhere on the surface of the orange. The shortest distance between those two points will be a straight line which should pass through the interior of the orange to some degree. But, the distance between those two points is slightly greater if you travel on the outside of the orange, on the curved surface of the fruit.
