Number one, you need a cage and the bigger the better, but make sure the bar spacing is 1/2 inch. Also, horizontal space is better than vertical space, so don't bother with the cages that are tall and tower like.
You will need at least 3 food dishes....one for a good quality pellet, one for a good quality seed mix and one for fresh fruits and vegetables.
You will need a water dish or bottle....I use bottles with all my birds and find them much more sanitary than water bowls. Caged birds sometimes enjoy making 'bird soup' in their water bowls by dropping food and pooping in them. Whatever you choose, good sanitation is an important issue. Keep the bowls and or bottle scrupulously clean!
Also...if you do decide to use a water bottle, make sure your bird is drinking from the bottle. If the bird has never used a bottle before, it may be reluctant at first, so put a dish filled with clean, fresh water under the tip of the bottle so it can access to both until you actually see it drinking from the bottle.
You need perches...and not the wooden dowels that sometimes come with bird cages either! They are worthless and can lead to foot problems for your bird.
You'll neeed:
Natural wooden perches of varying diameter.
One parakeet size "concrete" perch to keep its nails worn
Once soft like rope like perch such as a Ka-boing
Don't forget a few toys so your bird can amuse itself.
A cuttlebone and /or a mineral block too.
Newspaper or paper towels for the cage bottom.
A good book on parakeets or budgies.
Devote lotsa love and attention to your parakeet, especially if he is going to be a lone bird. You will become his flock member.
DO NOT bother with these items that some pet stores will sugggest that you need:
Grit....totally useless and potentially harmful to any hookbill. Psittacines crack their seed and DO NOT need grit for digestion!
Mite protector...the vapors are potentially harmfull to your bird! Caged birds seldom have mites and if you do see mites or crusting on the beak or feet....take your bird to a vet who is a certified avain specialist.
Good luck with your parakeet. If you get a handraised, weaned bird you will have a delightful companion if you care for him well and they are great talkers as well.

Parakeet are family of parrots. They eat seeds like Sunflower seeds. They will also eat fruits, like papaya and banana. Also get a wide mouth cup for putting water so that it can drink. Some old newspaper for the droppings at the bottom of the cage. You may also want to get a calcium/minerial stone for it to chew.

first you need a good size cage so that it has plenty of room to move around and also for the toys you will put in for him/her to play with. you will also need a food bowl or a feeder, a water tube that hangs on the side of the cage, perches and sand/gravel paper to put on the bottom of the cage, toys of course, but nothing to big as they do take up some space in the cage and you want the bird to have room to move around freely. millet as a treat , food, cuttle bone for their beak, a cover for the cage at night, vitimins for their health, a spray bottle or bath tub for the bird to clean in. I may have forgotten something, but the pet shop can help you. Good luck.

you can go to your local pet store or wal-mart and you can buy a parakeet starter kit and it will have everything you need it to begin. That is what we did for my son for his cockatiels.
