Psychotherapy is a range of techniques which use only dialog and communication and which are designed to improve the mental health of a patient/client/mental health consumer, or to improve group relationships (such as in a family). Most forms of psychotherapy use only spoken conversation, though some also use various other forms of communication such as the written word, art work or touch. Commonly psychotherapy involves a therapist and client(s) — and in family therapy several family members or even other members from their social network — who discuss their issues in an effort to discover underlying problems and to find constructive solutions.

If you are on the receiving end of it, you say whatever comes into your head. This may be current problems or past memories or even dreams. When I had psychotherapy I used to take a note book in with me as I am no good at doing it off the cuff, and that was OK. The psychotherapist will tell you what is going on using Freud, which means there are different stages of growing up. Because the psychotherapist has studied psychoanalysis he or she can give you a different perspective on your problems, and you will work out a different way of seeing them. For example, if you are seeing something as your fault and you discuss it in psychotherapy you will get extra insight into why it happened and why everyone behaved that way and you may stop feeling guilty over it. Eventually you will change as you will see everything differently and you will be able to handle stuff better. You will be able to look your problems in the face and feel a lot lot better about yourself. You may grow in confidence and like yourself, and also get stronger. It all takes time though. Eventually you will not need the psychotherapist any more and will be able to handle your own problems in the way he or she helped you. Might I add that it is a fascinating journey, but difficult as you get new feelings and when you are seeing the truth it is hard to handle. Some times it is great cos you feel so good as well.

Therapy may address specific forms of diagnosable mental illness, or everyday problems in relationships or meeting personal goals. Treatment of everyday problems is more often referred to as counseling (a distinction originally adopted by Carl Rogers) but the term is sometimes used interchangably with "psychotherapy".
Psychotherapeutic interventions are often designed to treat the client in the medical model, although not all psychotherapeutic approaches follow the model of "illness/cure". Some practitioners, such as humanistic schools, see themselves in an educational or helper role. Because sensitive topics are often discussed during psychotherapy, therapists are expected, and usually legally bound, to respect client confidentiality.

It is psychoanalysis or treatment of maladjustment's (in your brain) by a professional. Basically, talking to a therapist to work out problems either caused by a chemical imbalance or outside factors.
just my "2" cents :-)
It rocks!
