Generally the kind of person who asks this question has been let down by chix in the past. So sorry about that.
You may have that viewpoint because you are shallow yourself, and don't mix much with people who are not like you. You may want to be gorgeous, rich, and talented, and feel that you fall short - so you resent people who want the same things.
Or maybe you've met girls who have been taught that they can't be OK without a man to buy things for them or without the latest clothes and sparkly things. That can seem shallow, but if you take time with those girls, eventually you'll see a better side of them. Be patient, generally they just want to be loved, and they're scared of being rejected if they let their vulnerabilities show.
I used to be a shallow biatch once, so take pity on us poor girlies, we're only human and we'll improve as we get older and wiser.
Important point: one could easily ask why all males are fundamentally shallow... both sexes can be very superficial in similar ways.

Why are you restricting this to females? I think that everyone, regardless of gender, is basically shallow. Individual persons may have different levels of shallowness but we're all shallow to some degree or another.
