Eating Pizza is difficult without the proper cutlery, although this is a tradition to fold the pizza slightly so as the sauce is not spilling out all over that nice new white blouse. Always with a napkin to blot the mouth of residue.
Tearing bread, (breaking bread) is appropriate, and always with a napkin laid upon the lap to catch those crumbs.

20 years in the restaurant busines, I have waited on people ranging from three govenors of Texas, to the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives all the way to idiot gangbangers that did'nt know their a** from their elbow. Who says it is inappropriate to eat bread or pizza with your hands? I've seen tourists in Texas try to eat ribs with a knife and fork, and how do you eat whole Artichoke, the leaves and all with a knife and a fork? It's hilarious..it's like the Seinfeld episode with everyone eating the candy bar with a knife and fork. Most folks even at the high end are relieved when I tell them: my friend there is just no graceful way to do it. Just eat and enjoy your dinner. Some food items can only be eaten with your hands - crawfish a perfect example. Just don't forget: that's not lemon soup, thats the finger bowl.

In my country, we mostly eat food with our hands.. There's no rules or regulations about it, you juz lift it up and into your mouth! Really.. If you're still so concern, juz place, lets say.. pizza, on your four fingers, with the palm up and your thumb on the pizza. If you dun like your fingers getting sticky, put your thumb on the crust. Juz make sure your other fingers are balancing the pizza from below so it doesn't slope or slide downwards. If you're not used to it, it does make you feel silly. But that's the way it is.

Finger tips on base of crust with thumb on top crust, with smaller portions for smaller hands, or;
Two fingers on one side of pizza or large bread piece, thumb on the opposing end of the bread, and your last two fingers curled in with small folded paper napkin against palm, or;
Thumb and index finger on bread slices, glass and serviette on the other.
Bring food to your mouth, back straight, take bite size pieces with room in your mouth to quickly consume the morsel should conversation demand it, or:
Roll the pizza up (Maltese or Greek?) and eat as you would a kebab.

I scoop food onto my three middle fingers, then palm up, I use my thumb to "snap" the food into my mouth. I have done this so long, that when I go to a formal dinner, I have almost forgotten how to use a fork!

clean your hands properly . You can pick up your food with your thumb and the index finger( the one next to the thumb) to pick it up. If you are careful I can be sure you wont get all messy.
