It is important to go to the Bible for the answer. Many religions teach their own doctrines and not what the Bible teaches.
What does the Bible really teach?:
Ecclesiastes 9:5 says: "For the living are conscious that they will die, but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten." And verse 10 says: "All that your hand finds to do, do with your very power, for there is no work, nor devising, nore knowledge nor wisdom in She'ol, the place to which you are going."
Psalm 146:4 says that when a man dies, "his thoughts do perish".
These scriptures show that when a person dies, he ceases to exist. He cannot think, cannot speak, cannot work, cannot do anything. Death is the opposite of life. Living are conscious, the dead are conscious of nothing at all.
When Jesus resurrected his friend Lazarus, he did not tell any stories of being in heaven or "hell". Surely if while he was dead he was conscious and went somewhere, when he was resurrected he would have mentioned something. But he didn't. Jesus even likened Lazurus being dead as resting in sleep. He said: "Lazarus our friend has gone to rest". (John 1:11-14)
At 1 Corinthians 15:6, the apostle Paul wrote about some in his day who had "fallen asleep" in death.
Thus death was likened to being in a deep sleep, without dreams, resting.
This is all not a bad thing, but a good thing because the Bible shows that those who die are not doomed with no hope. It does not teach that those who die burn in hell eternally. Those who have died, do not suffer, we do not have to wonder or worry about our dead loved ones suffering.
There are several instances recorded in the Bible when those who have died were resurrected and were brought back to life again. And in the future, the Bible holds out the hope that our dead loved ones will be brought back to life. (John 5:28,29)
The scripture in John 5:28,29 speaks of a resurrection of both the unrighteous and the righteous. The "righteous"spoken of there, faithful servants of God mentioned in the Bible, such as Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, Ruth, and Esther, and many more. The righteous also include ones who die in our time.
As for the resurrection of the "unrighteous", this refers to those who did not learn about God and learn about the way to live their life to please God. They too will be resurrected and given time to learn about the true God, Jehovah, and serve Him. During a period of a thousand years, the dead will be resurrected and given an opportunity to learn God's laws and follow them. This period is what the Bible refers to as "Judgement Day". (Revelation 20:1-3; 12,13)
All those resurrected mentioned at John 5:28,29, are to be resurrected to a Paradise on earth. In the Bible, God promises that the righteous will live forever on earth, and there will be no more dying, nor, pain, nor mourning. Wicked ones will not exist on earth any longer at that time.(Psalm 37:10,11,29; Revelation 21:4)
The Bible does teach however, that some will be resurrected to heaven. It is a limited number of 144 000. Revelation 14:1-3. Jesus called such ones the "little flock". (Luke 12:32) Those who would be resurrected to life on earth, not part of the 144 000 who go to heaven are called the "other sheep". (John 10:16)
So unlike the teachings of false religion, the Bible does not teach that all the bad people will burn in hell eternally, and that all good people will go to heaven. God made the earth to be inhabited by humans (Isaiah 45:18) and His purpose has not changed. He always accomplishes what he purposes to do. (Isaiah 55:10,11) He purposed for the whole earth to be a Paradise and for all to live in peace and security forever. (Isaiah 65:20-25)

the truth is you choose life or death. You will be resurrected at the end of time, judged & then sentenced to eternal life or death. Look up hell or hades in a encyclopedia & see what it means, then it will be clearer. Scholars have nothing to lie about the study something and find the most logical educating & ruthful meaning. Think about it the Bible says God IS Love. not Hate. And you would have to have some hate in you to Burn someone forever, God has none. Also it says God is Just (justified/justice) No crime/sin would equal a life of tourment. But being judged & feeling the pain you caused someone, then w/god knowing your heart he gives you another chance or sentences you to return to ashes. That is just. Jesus wil reign 1000yrs for giving his life, then The father will take rule again. Satan will be loosed on earth once more for a short time anyone following him will will be thrown to the lake of fire (which symbols destruction) Never to live again. Sin & death will be no more. Satan & his demons were hurled to the earth when they were cast from heaven, not once in the bible does it say satan is in hell or rules hell. It says he is on earth & rules earth, but earth is not hell. the bible says jesus was in hell & jonah was in hell-you'll figure it out. Get a translation of the bible, not a version & do some studying. the truth shall set you free. life or death. thats fair.

The truth to Christians is God. It's called faith. But anyways, unless u have been dead and saw what happened, or know of someone who has (for real, not that limbo mumbo jumbo), there is no way u can tell Christians they are not right. There is no way anyone can give u an answer to this as the only way we will know 4 sure is after we die.
Better to live life as if there is a God and die to find out there wasn't, than live as if there is no God and die to find out there is.

Read Genesis 2:7, Ecclesiastes 12:7, 9:5 Acts 2:29 Luke 14:14, John 11:24, and Revelation chapter 20.
Hell is a greek myth, it is not eternal how we understand it. Christ said "whosoever believeth in him should not perish"
Jude 7 talks about eternal fire, Sodom isn't still burning.

... considered to be the truth by who? each group generally believes they are the correct one... or at least the most correct.
if they didn't then they wouldn't belive it would they?
but, when it boils down to it there IS one "this is how it actually works regardless of what people believe, expect, or think while they are alive"
and this truth, for those who understand it... transcends and overrides religious views. BUT, the problem, per se... is that its not really something that can be proven, shown, or explained... but merely that eventually you come to understand how it truly is, and for those who have understood that... its as matter of fact, undeniable, and simply part of life, as gravity is.
most of the people who really "get it" in the "how it actually, truly, really is" sense... realize that its silly to really try to convince anyone about it, and don't try too obsessedly.. because its pointless.

You have to die to know the truth. Jokes apart, but it is very difficult to digest the Christian understanding as it is illogical. In hindu understanding we are all part of 'Param Brahma' or super matter and got diluted our qualities with influence of 'Maya' or anti matter. Our lives and rebirths are processes towards conscious purification of our souls to ultimately dissolve into 'Param Brahma' which is knows as 'Moksha'.

2Corinthians 5:8 We are confident, [I say], and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
Here is the 1 remaining inexact match:
2Corinthians 5:6 Therefore [we are] always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:
Hope that helps.
I Corinthians 13;8a, Love never fails!!!!!

Only one way to find out. Until we die, we will always be wondering. My opinion is that there is no life after death. You are underground 6 feet or on someones mantle in a jar.

one question for you...
ARE YOU ABSOLUTELY SURE THAT THERE ARE NO ABSOLUTES? -LIVE4TRUTH =]
p.s..ETERNITY is more than just a long time my friend.
I suggest you DISPROVE THE BIBLE FIRST, BEFORE REJECTING THE ONLY MEANS IN WHICH A PERSON CAN TRUELY BE 4GIVEN OF SINS AND ENTER INTO THE KINDOM OF HEAVEN. (being born-again) in the book of John.
GOD BLESS! OH WAIT! he has already, through his word! =]
