I read an article about the new Japanese Prime Minister -
The article said he was of the "Liberal Democrat Party" but all the issues he claimed to believe in sounded like the Republicans here in the US
- stronger military
- less social spending
- stronger alliance with US and China
- abolishing pacifist legislation

Yes japanese "democrats" are very similar to U.S. "republicans". The key word you use is liberal which means to support reform. You have to understand the Japanesse past to see why being like our republicans or americans in general would be a reform to them. And actually at one time our republicans and democrats were oposite, the republicans were the liberals and democrats the conservatives.

LDP is just a name, translated from Japanese. Anyone can call themselves democratic. To tell you the truth, the LDP is as conservative a party as you'll find in Japan. Apart from nationalists, that is.

Are you surprised that Democrats are for this, also? Contrary to what some believe, Democrats don't want everyone on welfare.
