It's even worse if they happened to have been drinking beer. PHEW

Of course KIMBERLY K. I just choose not to do it at the dinner table. Do you?

Yes I know that in some countries it's polite to burp to show appreciation for the food.
I'm talking about being in a pub or restaurant and someone next to you or nearby lets go a beaut and it doesn't seem to bother them that they sound like a huge pig.

I don't know what kind of Jerry Springer family you have, but we don't do that in my family.

Personally I'm a big fan of table manners. I'm afraid I was taught them under a culture of fear and I wouldn't wish that on anyone so it's important to be kind and patient about it. I hate nothing more than seeing someone talk with their mouth full or eat with their mouth wide open along with all the hideous noises that produces, but elbows on the table are not a biggie, neither is which hand you hold your fork in, or where you stick your napkin. Those things just aren't important any more. Maybe they behave differently with you than when they are out Joan? After all, you're supposed to be able to relax and have fun with your family. It's a compliment in a way that they feel so relaxed around you. If he did the belching thing in public it would be different but honestly, the best way to curb that kind of behaviour is to ignore it. The novelty soon wears off if you get no attention from your behaviour. I'm sure I don't need to add this Joan because I'm sure you are aware already, but this really isn't your job and whether you approve or not is of no consequence I'm afraid. If your son and DIL want to bring up a bunch of serial killers then it is their choice to do so. I'm sure the boys will turn out fine though.

You know what I hate?

People like you who think you walk on water just because you act like a prissy little snots. I say "act like" because I don't know you well enough to officially say that you are, altough I wouldn't be surprised.

Burping is a natural body function, and just because you don't do it at the dinner table doesn't make you some sort of perfect little princess or whatever form of divine being you esteem yourself to be as a result of your self-righteousness. Give people a break, especially since sometimes there is so much pressure from the gas of the burp coming up that it blocks the airway, making it almost impossible to breathe without burping. If you want to decide that you are going to refrain from burping, fine, but don't just assume that you're a better person because of it, because that's just not the case.

Since we are in the Etiquette Forum, I agree with you, it is rude and crude to burp loudly at a dinner table. Never mind the smell that projects out of their mouth..that is a whole other Issue.

This person simply has no couth, and it is polite to excuse yourself yourself from the table, hold the napkin over your mouth, or if this is an involuntary function, an "Excuse me" is adequate.

I say leave the belchers and the complainers to their beer drinking contest, where they can show off their unique talents.

Burping loudly at the dinner table is, surprisingly, a way of showing appreciation for your host's cooking in, if I'm not wrong, some Middle Eastern countries. Or it could be Mongolia.

In western countries it is etiquette to cover your mouth when breaking wind. But in some arab countries it is an insult to your host and or chef if you do not burp, the louder the better. so when in Rome.

Lucky-Cat, I only hate it if I'm out to dinner with friends. But if I'm at home with my family then I don't pay any attention to it. Most men think it's funny and we all know men!!!!!! Etiquette is something they no nothing about. Well, most of them. If it's a family member then bop them on the head and tell them to get some manors,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, or throw a pea at them................. anyway don't sweat it you have no control over it and you can only lead by example........

Yes I know I do. But in some countries it is considered polite to burp to show your thanks to the host for the meal. However in my op ion in America that's gross and maybe who ever doing this horrendous gesture should move (Ha,Ha)

In certain cultures, burping is said to be a compliment to the chef.
