There are two navaratris in a year, six months apart. They are in fact celebration of spring equinox and autumn equinox. The principle of what is popularly known as Vikrami calendar is as follow.
The first month of the new year should begin with the new moon preceding spring equinox. The first nine tithis ( a month is divided into 30 unequal parts called tithis) constitute navaratri.ditto six months later.
In practice , the Vikrami celebration of equinox comes 23 days later than the actual event.Strictly . navaratri should begin before say 23 March. But the Vikrami calendar nominally takes 13th April as the spring equinox.

During Navaratri, we invoke the energy aspect of God in the form of the universal mother, commonly referred to as "Durga," which literally means the remover of miseries of life.

The worship re-confirms the scientific theory that energy is imperishable. It cannot be created or destroyed. It is always there.
