Now that all the real problems have been fixed with plasma TVs
(for example: it now takes 16-60 straight hours of a static image being on the screen to get burn-in on any NAME BRAND plasma, and BURN-IN IS NOT PERMANENT ON PLASMA TVs; and, with proper power protection, Plasmas will last an average of 20yrs at 8 hours a day [60,000-66,000 hours]),
the main differences between Plasma and LCD on a practical "What it means to you" level are:
1. Screen size: The biggest LCDs are 40" and 46" and tend to cost considerably more than their 42" and 50" Plasma counterparts.
ADVANTAGE: Plasma
2. Glare: Lcd's have a soft screen that reflects little (if any) light; whereas plasmas have a hard screen that can reflect bright light sources.
ADVANTAGE: LCD
3. Picture Quality: Actually the picture quality is determined more by brand and overall quality of the TV itself.
In other words, there are some LCDs that look better than some Plasmas and there are Some Plasmas that look better than some LCDs.
ADVANTAGE: Varies, the best thing to do is go to a store and look around; see what catches your eye.
Best Brands (from my experience NOT Consumer Reports):
LCD:
1. Sony (XBR models)
2. Samsung
3. actually a tie between: LG/Toshiba/Philips/Panasonic/
Sony(non-XBR)/JVC/ and Sharp; each with its own pro's and con's
4. Nothing else is really worth listing.
Plasma:
1. Pioneer Elite
2. Pioneer Performance (Pioneer's normal line)
3. Samsung/LG (but only the LG's with the built-in DVR)
4. Philips
5. Toshiba/Panasonic/LG (without DVR)
6. HP
WARNING: AVOID VIZEO AND POLAROID TVs AT ALL COSTS!!

Go for LCD, it's not only economical but versatile too, with a Plasma every Manufacturer gives a warranty for 2 Years only and seconly if there are any blank cells resolving it in a LCD is easier than with a Plasma

For the size you're talking about, I would go with a plasma television. Below are the advantages and disadvantages of each.
LCD Display Advantages:
Good color reproduction
Very thin
Lightweight
Perfect sharpness at native resolution
Excellent longevity
No screen burn-in effect
LCD Display Disadvantages:
Fixed resolution
Notorious “screen door” effect on lesser models
Poor contrast ratios (even excellent units have only 700:1)
Very difficult to produce deep blacks (see above)
Weak and “stuck” pixels are common
Viewing angle on older models may be narrow
Potential for slower refresh rates than plasma (some newer models are getting better)
Plasma Advantages:
Newer models have much better contrast ratios than many direct view TVs
Excellent color reproduction
Excellent life expectancy
Excellent viewing angle
Plasma Disadvantages:
Although thin, plasma TVs are fairly heavy (professional installation recommended for on-wall use)
Very susceptible to screen burn-in
Cannot produce deep black levels accurately
Fragile
Use a lot of power

Go With LCD... they last longer than plasma, plus plasma burns out in spots on the tv and it gets annoying when you wanna watch it.

You see LCD is harder to make than plasma which means plasma is cheaper.....but LCD productions are rising and they give better images, brighter screens and plasma have problems where images can have a black dot(some term is used to refer this problem)Go with LCD for better quality viewing or plasma for cheaper solution

I'd say LCD - cheaper, almost as good and you won't get burn-ins.
