How absolutely infuriating!! I am a nurse - if you were one, would you seriously want to deal with somebody else's bodily fluids, and get blood, pus, faeces, urine etc on your hands, and then wander round with those germs on your hands?!?!? NO! you would be at the sink immediately, probably nearly sick with revulsion - why would we be any different!?!?
Whilst it cannot be denied that Hand-washing is a factor in control of all germs, it is not the main culprit - and if it were the only culprit - then visitors/relatives etc hold just as much responsibility.
The Government has you believe that this problem is all down to Nurses because we are a 'sitting duck', whatever is thrown at us - be it dirty practise or threatening us with jobs cuts, they know they can do this as Nurses will never feel able to strike. Accusing Nurses (and Visitors more recently) is an easy answer to what is a financial nightmare for the NHS - the real problems with control of Infection costs millions to resolve - ie hiring a reasonable number of more effective cleaners (and one that don't serve food after cleaning the loos!), research and investment into the mis-use of Antibiotics (THIS IS THE REAL CULPRIT!!!) costs millions that the government can't contemplate. So the easy answer - accuse the nurses and throw some alcohol hand-wash about!! This is not solving the problem, granted it may be stemming it to some degree, but there is no quick fix to any of this!
Over-use of antibiotics, mainly by GP's wanting to pacify moany patients is the biggest problem; prescribing antibiotics for 'colds' etc, where the wrong bacteria exist for that antibiotic had led to resistancy of the drugs, and allowed mutation of bacteria = MRSA.

It's not just a staff issue. A big part of the problem is the patients. We have patients that come in strictly for treatment with MRSA, and high level universal precautions are taken with them and the areas they are in, But then they leave and trot off to the grocery store or mall etc. You can't generalize the cause of an outbreak that was.

No it wouldnt, if you saw just how many visitors ignore the handwashing signs you would realise its got to be more to do with them!
