The purpose of prayer is for you to talk with your Lord/Father. He looks at you just like his own children so of course it would make sense that he'd also like to speak to you. In worship, there are quite a few answers. To have fellowship with fellow Christians, to praise Him, to express yourself. That also goes with prayer.

Wonderful question: Omnipotent father, please bestow a special blessing on the oracle that brought this forth. As your messenger and one of your prophets sent in these trying times, I proclaim a special blessing on him.
Prayer is an attempt to commune with God: we seek His presence. It is the equivalent of seeking the collective meetings with 100 billion world leaders simultaneously. We need to prepare, make sure that our spiritual appearance is correct: Psalm 24:3. To make sure that your prayers are not blocked, (this is called intercessionary prayer--prayer that goes straight to God's throneroom without hindrance) ask God to cleanse your mind, body and spirit and to forgive you and your family going back 4 generations of all misdeeds known and unknown. If you know the lists of things that are grievious to God, then spell them out.
When you are finished those cleansings, close your eyes and ask God to reveal His will for your life. Ask Him to let you feel the power of the prayers that prophet Boaz just sent for you and wait for God to purge you and to bless you. Make sure that you are able to stand when God is finished ministering to you.
What happens to you after wards is worship: being in God's presence. When you experience that --that awesome presence of God that allows you to hate sin and to realize that all the spiritual imitations: booze, drugs etc, they were distractions from the real ultimate "High"--being in the presence of God--that is worship. So prayers are the steps and worship is the "Hug from God." Millions of people try to obtain it: many are called--few are chosen.
Boaz.

The purpose of prayer and worship is to realise God with in us and to crave for the feeling to merge with Him.
There must be a complete oneness with God. Prayer of love and faith will move mountains.
Thanks

the purpose is to reach out to that Higher Being. I mean, how would you feel if your child didn't give you any acknowledgment or show any appreciation for all of the things that you have done for them(i.e. waking up in the middle of the night when they cry, worrying constantly, feeding, bathing, etc)?

Religious beliefs arise from hope and fear. Man, who is not master of his own destiny, sees himself in the hands of invisible powers, who his fantasy equip with human characters, and who he tries to appease through prayers and sacrifices.
