I learned when I was very young. I started making lunch for my Mom when I was 6, just soup and a sandwich, but then moved up to breakfast once in a while, eggs and bacon and toast. By the time I was in 8th grade, I could make fairly decent lasagna and could barbecue a pretty good medium rare steak. However, as a warning, I do have some pretty nifty scars from cooking, besides the ones I got later in life. I once splashed bacon grease, a fair amount, on my arm. (age 7) Another time (age 9) I had to get stitches in my hand due to a pretty wicked cut from a knife. So remember to teach about the dangers in the kitchen because a little popping oil made me jerk the pan I was frying bacon in and it turned into a trip to the hospital with a severe burn. In that way, things that might give an adult a little boo-boo can escalate into real trouble with kids. I would say keep the very sharp knives/blades and very hot oil away until at least 10 or 12 yrs old. But that's me. I did end up with many more fond memories of cooking with my Mom and it helped me to bond with my step-dad, who I now just call Dad.

I think that as soon as they can truly understand the importance that food has in our lives, and can comprehend units of measure then it's time to cook. You don't really have to "teach" them either, ask if they will help in the kitchen. Not only do they feel they're doing something good, but they also learn how to cook in the process! Check out Foodnetwork.com, search for Emiril Lagasse, and "there's a chef in my kitchen" is the name of his book about cooking with the kiddos. Happy cooking!!

It got nothing to do with the child's age. As long that child is mature enough to know that fire is dangerous he/she should learn how to cook. Four year old can be smarter than 20 year old individual. It is about maturity and brain, not age.

When they are old enough to want to help. A three year old could help stir cake batter, scoop out cookie dough and anything else that won't risk danger of being burned or cut. My daughter started helping to cook at 3 and now she's a top notch cook.

Around 6 months. Just tie a cooking utensil in their little hand, prop them up next to the burner and let them go wild. They need to learn early.

I think it would depend on the child's maturity and also the type of meal you're making. Lots of variables. But I would guestimate 8 years old and up.

start slowly, like teaching them basic guides and rules, then put them into practice, starting with a cake mix, or something, then going on from there.
dont put them at the stove or oven straight away. that is definitely something ill be careful of with mine. that does hurt, believe me.
no offence meant, but its a bit like dog training, rewar them for being good and clever. then it will appeal to them.
good luck!!
