What brand/model of digital SLR would be the best for my money?

i have a nikon SLR that I really like, but I'm not too picky about brand, I've heard good things about both nikon and canon. I want something under $1000, hopefully 800ish, but not the bottom of the line DSLR. Just kinda curious what brands/models people like and why.

Canon or Nikon, both are forerunners in quality cameras with plenty of lenses available for you in the future. Find out a little more about photography so that you will know what features you really need or those that you do not. Learn first, then consider what you want to spend and then buy. When you buy into a camera brand, you're really buying into a system of lenses as well. Canon usually puts out certain features first but Nikon usually comes out with better quality build and better quality lenses. Take two comparable cameras (comparable in terms of features) and hold both cameras, look through the viewfinder and feel the ergonomics. Whatever feels more comfortable to you, after all, you'll be the one using it.

Since cameras out outdated every 9-10 months now by newer models coming out surpassing the present ones, why don't you buy a good used one and save a few dollars for when you are more proficient? If this seems like a viable idea, go to www.keh.com and look into getting a Nikon D70S with the kit lens. It's right now at great prices because of the Nikon D80, which was recently introduced (Nikon's lens mount has not changed since 1959 so that you'll have a greater selection of lenses, howevery, you must only use AF lenses if you want the auto-focus feature). Just a thought. Good luck and best wishes.

Get a Canon or Nikon. All of their models are good, and good value for money. Other brands might have something to compete with a specific model, but even then go with the Canon/ Nikon - for the incredible lens selection, and for the nearly unlimited upgrade path.
Without knowing your budget and what you shoot, it's impossible to make specific body + lens suggestions.

Just checked back to see if you'd posted additional details & noticed buddhaboy's answer. The Rebel could be either the 350D or the 400D (not the 300D, I trust). And it's not a D30 but a 30D. Also, the 20D might be better for you. Yeah... you need to give us more info.

Really depends on the type of shooting you do. and your budget!
I'm guessing your just starting out? Before you invest 30.000 in a Hassalblad system, Try the canon rebel, go digital. about 700 to 800 us pulse 150 for a good flash card.
Put it on manual and start experimenting

Good luck
