It is a compressor like the one found in your home refrigerator that is designed to pump a refrigerant such as R134(or R12) as the refrigerant gains or loses heat around the refrigeration cycle. It pressurises the refrigerant and increases the temperature of the refrigerant above the ambient conditions so that heat can be rejectected by the condenser.

The compressor needs to have a high compression ratio, Low clearance volume (for reciprocating type), minimum friction in bearing, must not allow too much oil to mix with refrigerant etc
