Germany, like Japan, has a very strong engineering culture.
In the US, a comic character like Dilbert is an engineer, and therefore ridiculous - that says it all. In Germany, being an engineer is something to be proud of.

War creates idea's and fuels creation. before the U.S. got into the war, we had no reason to build such things. We were at peace. The germans needed new and more powerful technology, thus they began to work towards it. By the time the U.S. got into the war, the germans were so far advanced that it was a miracle we won.
Whats better then German technology is Swiss technology. Why are they better you ask? All the free time. Their always neutral haha

We often think of the Swiss and the Germans as great tech people. They have disciplined societies just as many Scandinavian countries.
One explanation is that if you live in a cold climate, you had better be clever and organized to keep from freezing. This was even truer in the past since people didn't have heaters to protect them from the cold.

Many countries are innovative, its just the matter of how much money is put into the research. Just that the germans were in the spotlight because of their constant research and attempts at new technologies.
