Animals, obviously to most I'd say, have a consciousness.
Why humans have an advantage over most animals is that we have knowledge of that consciousness and can thus access it and change it.
Besides that, animals and humans are no different (but that *is* a big difference).
I'd argue that it is not possible to truly respect human life without truly respecting all sentient beings. ;-)

Okay theology aside.
Behavior is instinct or in the humans' case both instinct and acquired.
Spirit is the essence of all living beings. Grass, Trees, Animals and Humans.
Soul is the religious belief of an transformation of energy that is carried with the human body to the next level or what ever they believe. This is a choice. Many believe we only have spirits.
Since animals have not spiritual beliefs the have no soul. Not a problem. Yet they do have spirits. Very strong and incredible ones. Anicient humans have long honored animal spirits. As it must be part of your "makeup" as well, since you have such strong feelings about them. Wonderful.
Not all animals or humans have the "innate" skills to care for their young or even themselves. That is a fact. Sad yet true.
Best wishes on your journey. Don't you worry, if you believe that your animal spirits will follow your soul-they most likely will.
I know that in my version of heaven all my loved ones will join me there from my humans, animals to my favorite rose bushes.

To care for their young ......is an instinct and the fact of caring in itself for off springs does not mean necessarily that it is a characteristic for having a soul . Humans can never be compared to animals , we have an emotional intelligence ...ie we have been endowed with myriads of emotions like love , charity, compassion , altruism , and evidently they come also with their opposites ......
These emotions can never be experienced within the animal kingdom ...they only possess a strong instinct of preservation .

Animals ARE souls. Living breathing things. Genesis 2;7...man came to BE a living soul.
Genesis 1; 20,21,24,25...a swarm of living souls....living souls according to their kind....Revelation 16;3....every living soul died...The word 'soul' is translated from the Hebrew NEPHESH which means, that which breathes. (Ezekiel 18:4) Look! All the souls—to me they belong. As the soul of the father so likewise the soul of the son—to me they belong. The soul that is sinning—it itself will die.
(Ecclesiastes 3:19-20) For there is an eventuality as respects the sons of mankind and an eventuality as respects the beast, and they have the same eventuality. As the one dies, so the other dies; and they all have but one spirit, so that there is no superiority of the man over the beast, for everything is vanity. 20Â All are going to one place. They have all come to be from the dust, and they are all returning to the dust.

Some animals care for their young. Some don't. I've seen a turkey eat its young right after they hatched. Some humans aren't much better.
What I consider to be important is the creature's capacity for intelligence. By that standard, even humans have a long way to go.

Higher animals do have Souls, indeed, very similar to those of humans. There is a very thin dividing line between the Souls of animals like dogs, horses and cattle, and human Souls.

I beleive they do have souls and they communicate with each other in their own language they feel pain and are happy just like us and if there is a hereafter yes they will be there with us, they cant speak to us in their language to tell us but if you truly are in tune with the animals they will speak to you and you will know they do have souls, I love animals and I beleive they do have souls they just dont have a chance with mankind,

who says that animals dont have soul. They do have it infact they are the truthful, faithful and honest creature of all on te earth.
Be it either a dog , a rabbit or a cat or any other animal.
If you give them love they will surely give their life at time if cicumstances demand. They are very loyal to their master and would not allow any one interfearing with them.

Yes animals have no soul, spirit and common sense like human beings.Animals have only instinct for self preservation and caring for their youngs..That the difference between animals and humanbeings.God gives us common sense and soul,so we should use it for our maximum benefits..Animals can not make a bed, chairs, car, airplene, telephone, electricity, etc.Animals can only make thier nests.,because they have no soul and common sense.

And many species of animals eat their young too. I am an atheist so don't try the souls argument against me.
