no thats a myth -- we can touch dogs and i have a pet Rocky who is a Shetland sheep dog and he is very adorable. Prophet Muhammed-pbuh himself had patted the forehead of dog as stated in Hadith. but one should take a bath before they pray -- incase they have touched dogs , not only dogs for that matter. and then they can pray. and one can train dogs easily. My pet now knows that he is not supposed to enter our prayer room and not touch me when i have to pray.
and also in Islam one who is not kind to animals doesnt smell the fragnance of Paradies. do u remember the hadith of a woman who was thrown in Hellfire for torturing a dog (by locking in a cageand not giving it food/water)?
we are humans and we have a responsibility to help other species. just being a superior race for name sake isnt enough.

Muslims are not forbidden from touching dogs. But if we are touched, we have to wash away the body part or clothing that was touched.

It is considered dogs are not clean. It is allowed for you to keep dog for security or hunting purpose. If a dog touches you, the clothe has to be changed before praying.
