If it is not because of an injury or a broken bone, then it is because of PLEURISY (Pleuritis) which is causing you this pain. It is due to the inflammation of the pleura and is common after pneumonia or a lower respiratory tract infection. Most commonly it is related to some viral pneumonia which may have been manifested by cough, fever, prostration of varying degrees, varying ranges in difficulty in breathing. Bacteria are also commonly implicated like Streptococcus, Tuberculosis, etc.
Besides routine blood tests (which may reflect a raised WBC count with lymphocytosis) and test for ESR, a Sputum culture with antibiotic sensitivity tests become essential as is an X-ray of the chest to confirm the diagnosis of Pneumonia/pneumonitis and pleural effusion if there is any.
If you have been keeping a good health otherwise, there would probably be nothing to be overtly worried about. However, if your health has not been so good in the recent past, you may have to be tested perhaps for immunocompromised state, diabetes, and for Tuberculosis.
Sometimes a liver abscess may burst giving rise to pleuritic reaction of the adjacent pleura above the diaphragm. However this is very rare.
A course of antibiotics along with pain killers would have to be prescribed for you. Please consult your own doctor for this problem.

Rib out of place?
Gall bladder or spleen problems.
I get pains exactly like that usually on the left side, but occasionally on the right. They started when I was pregnant with my son and come and go occassionally since then and he is 9 now. I was told it was my gall bladder.

It is most likely gas, though it is possible that you have pulled an intercostal muscle. These are the muscles between your ribs. Try stretching and deep breathing exercises. Weather gas or muscle, this will help.
