well theoretically it shouldn't be.
but the way many approach it... it definitely is, for them.
I once talked to an evangelical atheist.
my last shred of hope (though, it seems to have an amazing rate of regeneration....) only survived that encounter by making myself believe he didn't really think the stuff he said. it was just too discouraging to think anyone could really think that way.
this guy was proactively anti-deity. almost identical in behavior to evangelical fundie christians, but just with "don't belive in god! because its not real!" instead of "come belive in jesus and be saved!"

Atheism is not a form of religion.
Here is the definition:
RELIGION
a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.
An atheist has THEIR OWN moral code and does not fit into a specific agenda....except that they do not believe in a higher being and thats it. Rules and morals are made by themselves instead of being set for them by a higher religion.
No one person should shove their beliefs on another person regardless of proof or not and even though these ppl may have set a bad example by some atheists not all of them are like that. Even though they might claim to be atheists also doesnt mean that they do not have a right to talk about what they believe in and should be able to debate anytime with anyone of any religious denomination in yahoo answers.

From what you say you've experienced, I'd call it more of an OBSESSION. How can an atheist "convert" you to a position in which they have no belief? Religion is a BELIEF. Atheism is the antithesis of belief. I have friends of many faiths, & those with none. We respect each other, & don't get into nonsense dialoges that lead nowhere. I HAD a friend who was constantly trying to push his "belief" down my throat--very tiring! (Notice past tense.) NO. It is NOT a religion. One could say they "religously" try to convert you! You see the difference?

No, atheism is not another religion... bald is not a hair color, is it? It is the absense of a belief in a higher power or deity.
We do not try to convert people... we inform, educate and hope that people will one day be smart enough to realize that science can prove what it says it can prove. It's not just books with words. We have no one or nothing that we worship or that threatens to burn us alive if we disobey.
Nice try, though. Kudos to you.

no. they are here because fundies are so vehement about the lies they are being told. Atheists don't care if you change, just that you question, your religion. If someone keeps telling you oranges taste bad, and you never check it out for yourself, how do you know he is telling you the truth? The same is true with religion. If someone tells you that you have to believe what you are told, and you never do any research outside the bible, how do you know he is telling you the truth. Be a skeptic, not a sheep!

Atheism: A disbelief in the existence of deity.
Religion: The service and worship of God or the supernatural.
Observe the contradiction.
So, as you can see from the above definitions, clearly Atheism cannot be another Religion.

It would only become a religion if people were to worship a deity or give respect and praise to some supernatural power. Since atheists do not believe in doing such things, they can't possibly be religious.

I will agree that some atheists are pushy. But that does not make atheism a religion.

No...The only thing that links all atheists together is the fact that we do not believe in a higher deity. There is no set of rules that all people who call themselves atheists follow.

lol, thats a funny idea and probably a correct one. which is exactly why i choose faith over religion. i dont get caught up in man-made tradions or trying to convert people. if they see in me what they feel is missing in their life, then i will explain it to them. but i wont expect anyone else to be a christian just because I think its the right thing to do. accepting or rejecting eternity is their own choice. shoving crap down peoples throats will only make them choke. which is why i dont see why athiests or any other "religion" try so hard to make their point. people cant see it if their eyes are closed. i think they go way overboard and tend to get really rude, which isnt going to convert anyone.
