At the base of the dogs penis is a gland. Not the testes (balls) this is a totally separate gland.

This gland swells when the dog is aroused. Once penetration takes place the gland swells to it's maximum. The only thing that makes the gland reduce is time. Anything from 5 - 20 mins. depending on the dog. This is what locks them in.

There are many theories on this gland, the most being the natural course of survival of the species, going back thousands of years.

It is very important to never try to break two dogs apart that are tied, this can cause irreparable damage to the male and the female.

When dogs tie this is to insure the semen stays in. The male penis swells up and is held in place with a sticky substance. Some males can not perform this act and have to be collected at which the female is the AI. many breeders choose to collect and AI their ***** to make sure both dogs do not get sexually transmitted diseases

The "tie-ing" doesnt last long. As soon as they are free from each other, the ***** can accept another male. When tied they are rump to rump, in that way they cant be attacked when at their most vulnerable
Numerous males can father a litter, so the strongest sperm will survive. The tie-ing just gives and extra chance to the sperm.

The purpose of the "mating tie" is to ensure that all the semen gets inside the female (all of it, of course, is not necessary--but it helps), and to prevent the female from mating with other dogs soon after.

yup, stuck like chuck. it's an evolutionary thing that when the male ejaculates, the tip of his penis swells and becomes "locked" inside the female to ensure the success of the fertilization. it's only temporary though.

watching a nature channel show about wolves, they said it was to insure fertilization could take place before another wolf could come along.
prolly the same in dogs.
