Canon PowerShot S3 IS seems to be pretty good camera with features that you can't find in other camera.

Like .....
# 12x optical zoom lens with USM and UD lens element
# Optical Image Stabilizer
and great video recorder (very good quality)

There are great cameras in every price range. For taking snapshots around the house, a simple Kodak or Canon would probably suit your needs just fine. Something between $150 and $250. Other brands could have interesting models too, but Kodak and Canon are consistently good (and good value for money).
Visit a shop, have a look at some, and simply get whichever model feels best in your hands. The only thing to really look out for are that some low-end models don't shoot video with sound.
And don't let a sales guy talk you into the latest & greatest.... specifications like 10 megapixels or 12x zoom are overkill for most people - don't pay extra for those features.
The camera will come with everything you need to use it, except for a memory card. With a basic camera, a generic '1 giga-byte card' will be more than plenty. Memory cards come in diffent shapes & sizes, but the sales guy will know which ones work with which cameras. They also come in different price ranges - but again, you don't need to pay extra for whiz-bang specifications (those are only usefull for digital SLR cameras).

You must go to www.dpreview.com and use the buying guide to select the one(s) with the features and quality you want in your price range. Then, go to circuit city, compusa, etc. to actually handle the camera. This is important. The camera must fit comfortably into whatever hand type you have. Controls can be very hard to use for people with large hands or fingers on many cameras.

It's really up to you and your taste and feel. dpreview and steves digicams will give you an overall rating, but you need to decide which of these 'best for price cameras' works for you *in your hands*.

FYI - I have many friends that bought Nikon coolpix and they all now have other cameras. The Nikon did not stand up to regular family use. About half just stopped working all together (would not turn on any more). I searched around and found very good reports on both the Kodak easyshare family and the Casio card series. I went with the Casio Card EX-600SR and was so happy with it that I bought one for each of my kids. They love them also. They are stainless steel bodies with anti-shake and as large a movie as will fit on your SD card.

Start with the budget. This may seem backwards, but it's not. You can find a decent camera to match any amount of money you want to spend.

Next, find a friend who will help you learn how to use the camera. This "friend" could even be the clerk in your local photo shop. Buy the camera that your friend recommends so that they will be able to teach you how to use it.

After you know what you are doing and are ready for your next camera - and this will come sooner than you think - you will be in a position to make your own choice.

If you have some vague ideas about price and ddesired features, go to http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare.asp and see what they select for you.

Well, I'm a Japanese, sorry for inconvinience of my language.

I think american people dont know much about cameras.
I
f you dont care about the price, mainly you have a 2 choices.
Fuji FinePix F30 or Panasonic FX01(FX07 new one)

Fuji F30 enable you to take a photo in the dark light. so you can take a photo of fire works. and also its shatter speed is so fast.
ISO1600 image is clear enough. you cant evern compare to others in this function. Other camera's image of ISO1600 is so rough and not clear. Fuji has the best CCD of degital camera in the world.

and one more choice is Panasonic. FX01 makes it easier for begginers to take a good photo with shake-reduction shystem and the batteri durability is good.

Olympus is not good at the battery durability and the image is roghter than other modeles.

Those two cameras have noticeble functions which other cameras dont have it.

And in the last, dont chose smaller size cameras easily,
