he has a lot of testosterone flowing through him at the moment and it makes boys have difficulty in focusing. It will settle down at the age of 7 (then hits again for puberty, i've heard this time it's worse..lol) the best you can do is when giving instructions get him to look at you then repeat back what you said then it has definatly "gone in" Another thing friends of mine have used for their boys is fish oils. You get these in capsule for from the health food store or chemist. Try to get it in natural form rather than chemically derived. It may take a few weeks but people swear by it.

It could be diet related. Wheat does that to some kids. The other thing to try is keeping him challeged mentally. Lastly, have him do 2 things at once. Read AND take notes or underline. Get him a kneadable eraser (at art supply stores). It's like a very tough silly putty that never wears out. If he uses that while doing schoolwork, it may help him to focus better. When he's at home sit with him to help him with his homework. Help him to stay focued. Find some special study skills and make them into some sort of a secret. Tell him that these skills you're teaching him are used for adults, so he's super special for getting to use them so young. He'll be more likely to remember and use them if they're this really cool secret. Most of all, be sure that his teacher is patient. Yelling, screaming, and embaressing him will only make the situation worse. :)

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY SON HE IS ALSO IN 1ST. GRADE.. WHAT I DO IS THAT I TELL HIM HE MUST LISTEN TO ALL THE ADULTS AROUND HIM ALL DAY LONG THEY ONLY TELL HIM THINGS THAT WILL KEEP HIM SAFE. GIVE HIM AN AWARD AT THE END OF THE WEEK. SOMETHING SMALL IF ONLY HE BEHAVES IN SCHOOL AND IN SCHOOL GIVE HIM SOME CHORES AT HOME SO HE CAN FOCUS ON THAT ONE SPECIAL THING KIDS DO THINGS BUT SOMETIMES THEY GET NEGATIVE PRAISE INSTEAD OF GOOD PRAISE ASK HIM IF HE WANTS TO BE KNOWN AS THE BAD BOY IN SCHOOL. I DO AND MY SON SAYS NO HE'S GOT ALOT BETTER IN THE LAST WEEK ALSO DON'T FORGET THERE ALOT OF RULES IN THE FIRST GRADE THEN KINDERGARTEN HE WILL BE OKAY DON'T WORRY SO MUCH DO THE REWARD SYSTEM IT WORKS GOOD LUCK AND HAVE PATIENCE

You have to find his passion, it may be music so buy him a guitar. The lessons to learn how to play a guitar for example will help with him learn how to sit still and focus. Or get him into a martial arts group, these classes teach disapline and focus too skills he will need for the rest of his life. If you let it go he will always have a poor attention span and this will affect him his whole life.

Get the book Driven to Distraction. It sounds like he has attention deficit disorder. Get him evaluated by your school. There are many learning techniques he can learn. Having a coach to help him. The coach can't be you or a family member or teacher.

Get him into a strict routine and stick with it. He also may not be getting enough from school like being board. My son is that way he gets bored of school easily and gets distracted alot. At school some teachers do what they can and you just need to explain to them if he is a visual person that is how he learns, or maybe he is to smart for his grade and needs to be challenged more. You can take him to a neurologist to see if there is anything going on.

medication is the last resort. Try all other options before this. Most kids do not have ADD. You could cut out television or limit it. Family dinners at the table actually is a benefit and a tutor will also help.

Get his hearing checked! reduce sugar intake, try to go organic if you can. Make sure he is getting enough rest. I was like that too and found I had suffered a hearing loss and just went about my days in my own little world.

ask him what he'd like to get into as far as activities. you might find that he'd very skilled at art or writing, music, and esspecially sports, make a reward system for his good days and focus on his positive traits, praise him when he pays good attention, all of these combined can do a whole lot of differance.
