My grandfather served in the Navy during World War II but he was so scarred by the war he never, EVER talked about it. Is there a way I can find him online, and perhaps see what his rank or role was? He died recently from old age.

Your local veteran's affairs office can help you. They also opened a memorial for those that served in that war so afterwards you can have his name and rank placed on the memorial at no charge.

Ask anyone you know who is or was in the service branches they usually know where the office is, if not call a recuiting office they can put you in contact with the right number.

You will need his full name, where he was born, his birthdate and any other information you may know. Ask your family for the information if you don't know but they need the basics to find his records and it can take a week or several to find older records but they will find it for you.

I think it depends what country he served under. I have a grandpa who served in the vietnam war. He is very open about his experiences though they were far from pleasant. He got some records once from a place in St. Louis Mo on Page Bl. Its called the army personnel records center. I have a great grandpa who served in the us army in WW2. He died in combat. I think his records were in the same place. I have another great grandpa who served in the soviet army in WW2. He also died in combat and no records are available for him. I have a great great grandpa who served in the imperial russian army in WW1. He died in combat and no records are available. If its a foreign army from a country that does not exist any more or lost the war you may not be able to get any records.

good luck

You address a letter to the Sec. of the Navy Washington DC and give his name date of birt, etc etc etc also if you have his serial number would be a big help in finding the info, they may request you send $5.00, but with me it twas the marine Corps and the firt inquiry is free, think the navy is the same good luck
