They should help and encourage farmers to produce more organic food in this country. The spirally costs of producing these days is unbelievable while the price we get is steadily going down.
Did you know that a lot of the milk produced is exported despite the fact that we produce enough ourselves to be self sufficient. The supermarkets buy it from abroad as it is cheaper. A dairy farmer is paid around 18 pence a litre for the milk he produces so between us and the shelf, look how much has been added. Milk price is also dropping by 0.4p per litre on October 1st but the price in the shops is going up.

A lot of "organic" food is already imported. Since when did the UK produce Bananas?
I think it is a big con - some pesticides and fertilizers are allowed and things can still be labelled "organic"
If you want to be sure what is in your vegetables - grow your own.
As far as meat and milk are concerned, the health and welfare of the animals is my main consideration, not whether it has an "organic" label.

The UK already imports large quantities of so called "organic food". But a great deal of it is not organic at all, it just has certificates saying that it is. There is a huge amount of fraud in the organic food business. I have inspected farms overseas that claimed to produce organic food and found them to be using large quantities of banned pesticides.
I trust British and German produced Organic foods, but no other.

no, it is not neccessary to import, we just need to get uk farming to wise up! we have plenty of resources in this country to produce organic, seasonal food, and stop cheap imports, (asda, adel, leeds, u.k, who import from holland!). we dont have to rely soley on supermarkets anyway, a day out to a farmers market to buy local organic produce and put a bit of pressure on the supermarkets, is productive too

That would be a great idea.. but first you would have to spray all the food with pesticides so that we're not importing any bugs as well, oh and then you'd have to irradiate it so that it would still look good after the long journey.

Local businesses are better placed to source locally, so I would suggest go for as near organic as you can get from a local supplier and encourage them in the right direction.
As for milk, I can't drink British milk because the antibiotics from the cows' feed reacts, so its NZ cheese and butter for me :-)
