It was like a myth that it was standard procedure to stand under doorplaces during earthquakes, but my architecture teacher told our class that this is where most bodies are found after a wreckage. He told us that he would tell us another day what to do, but I must have been absent or something, but the class ended then I said, whatever happened to his answer? So I hope I can get it here thanks.

Probably to get out of the building. But, I don't get it... it also has to do with where your at and what objects can fly at you. For example.. I wouldn't want to stand in the door-way at a Pier 1 Imports. Or be in the liquor aisle at the grocery store.

Hi, Door places or windows are definately not safe during an earthquake infact in u hide under a table that would be much safer. When u stand under the door there would be definately slabs falling on u as the door frame dosent cover your entire body. So u will be buried under slabs. Infact if u use a strong wooden table to hide and it has plenty of room in it, this will provide you a safe passage from the falling slab and also air to breathe over a period of time.
Hope that answers your question

The door frames have the beams over them. It is still your best bet as long as there is not glass or a window nearby. Most bodies are probably found there since that is where people go and if the building is totalled and no one lives, the bodies would be there. It is way more dangerous to run out and have the falling debrie get you.

What I heard was that the safest place would where two walls come together and form a 90 degree corner. If a building comes down the lintol above the door frame is sure to come down as well and that could be a problem if your under it.

I think there's a simple explanation here. There are more bodies found there not because it's unsafe, but because more people run to that location for safety. And, of course, if the entire buidling collapses it doesn't matter where you are in it. I'm no architect, but it seems like a doorframe would provide more support than say...a kitchen, with lots of windows.

doors and windows have r.c lintol (beam) above. this is to take the load off the wooden frame. taking `shelter' at doorway is not safe as chances that you will be crushed by the lintol. i hope this is the answer you missed! anyway...in case of a quake...GET OUT of the building is the safest bet!!

cheers!

i think the door places would be good because they are slightly reinforced. the bodies were probably found there after the rest of the building colapsed and people that were hiding there were the safest but not safe enough.

yes., even though doorways might be safer than the middle of the room, the best place is under a strong desk or similar, it will give you some space and oxygen and a place to pray !
