"House and Senate negotiators agreed Monday evening to spend $1.2 billion to install hundreds of miles of fence and vehicle barriers along the Mexican border as part of a $34.8 billion spending plan for the Department of Homeland Security for the coming year.
The biggest increase in spending in the bill, on which the House and Senate are expected to take final action on this week, is in the area of border security and immigration enforcement, which would get a total of $21.3 billion, an 11 percent jump over this year.
This includes money to hire 1,500 new Border Patrol agents, increasing the force to 14,800, and to add 6,700 detention beds. The $1.2 billion for border security is designated for a traditional fence, vehicle barriers and a so-called virtual fence made up of cameras and sensors.

That money could also be used to help build 700 miles of physical fence along a specific stretch of the Mexican border, a construction project that the House has already approved and the Senate is still considering.
“It is a major step down the road on border security,” said Senator Judd Gregg, the New Hampshire Republican who is chairman of the Senate panel that oversees the budget bill.
The bill also sets aside $4.34 billion for port security measures, including money for 450 new cargo inspection officers. That is up $600 million over the current year. The bill would also provide $178 million for new radiation screening equipment at domestic ports, among other initiatives."

JTM, if the illegal immigrants weren't so plentiful, the amount being spent on social welfare would become more than adequate for our citizens.

I'm sick of the whole issue. Either we control the border or we don't. But, the half way crap we have now is a joke. I saw the other day where two border patrol officers were arrested, seems they are illegal aliens. Who knows what will come next.
Personally I think a fence, real or the figment of some bureaucrat's imagination is something designed to appease voters. They will just go over, under, or through it. Armed troops, if abundant enough, would probably work. Most people in Washington DC are far more interested in their vote count than in any security for any American.
I haven't voted for an incumbent but once in the last 25 years. I invite America to join me in the next election. If we fired everyone and started over would it be any worse?
Sorry this is a very sore issue with me. I could type for hours on it but I won't. Good evening.

If they protect the border it will be good for all. I believe this step should be taken. The rest we will work on as time goes by. Too many deaths happening to all people of many nationalities. That is just plain wrong.

What I thinks is; it's a huge waste of OUR taxpayer' dollars! Since mR bUsH wants to build, and is probably already in process, a "Super Highway" from Mexico to Canada! (or, Canada to Mexico - depending on your preference in order... :)
So, we build a great speedway for the illegals to get to Canada, quickly, and stop them coming across the border at the same time???!!! (I know this is not the image tHOsE people have, it just seems ludicrous to me, is all!)
And, by the way - at least ONE of the 'terrorist' who they say did the attacks on the Twin Towers came in from Mexico, and yet, at least one came in from Canada, as well... Brains, they missed 'cause they thought God said trains, and ran to catch it, and missed getting there's.
I am really ticked off about the wasteful spending coming out of this administration!!!!
I think there is a new movie which describes it pretty well... "JackAss, the Movie!" (i think this is the correct title... but, you get my drift, eh?

I want to know why the House and Senate are NOT enacting a law that would provide a 5 year prison sentence with no parole and include a $250,000 fine first offense for employers who hire ILLEGAL ALIENS....
I want the border CLOSED... but I also want ALL ILLEGAL ALIENS and their children DEPORTED.... with all haste.... NO AMNESTY, NO BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP for children of illegal aliens.....
A fence/barrier is fine... but does nothing to get RID of the ILLEGAL ALIENS already INFESTING the United States....

I think it is a very good start. The money is nothing compared to what illegal immigrants cost this nation - no where near! It is money well-spent, as far as I can see.

the money I.N.S make from immigrant filing for stay in U.S. can pay for the fences.now immigrant have to pay more money to file for green card. Its a business, they can afford it or should i say the immigrants will pay.i agree in securing the borders, to avoid terrorists. one got to know who's coming in.i say those who live in the U.S for more than ten years and working and paying taxes with proof should allow some form of stay.and work in U.S.others, sign them up in the U.S. army.mandatory five years.so then the army will full of mexicanoes ,since they love U.S let them serve.many have come from other country serve and die for AMERICA LAND WE LOVE. GOD BLESS AMERICA.
