I had the same problem, when i was in my teens and Early 20's..
I was always given antibiotics, because at the time, the Dr.'s then, did not want to take them out.
If he cannot get his parents to pay for a Dr, or a clinic, then tell him to go to the emergency room of any hospital, they will take him in, examine him, and he can fill out a form for what is called"Charity Care", it won't cost him a dime. He can get help.
No hospital emergency room will turn him away, because he can't pay.
Chronic tonsillitis really sucks. I lived through it, but it wasn't easy.
Today, he has more options.
I REALLY know what it's like...my tonsils now, after so many repeated and long term infections, always look big, and kinda red, ( I used to get swollen glands along with it at times).
Doctors go back and forth, from year to year, whether or not they should be taken out, because they serve the purpose of preventing upper respiratory infections, like pneumonia, and terrible
chest colds, the tonsils "catch" the infection that would have gone into the lungs, many times. This is there purpose.
If they decide to take them out, and he is on charity care, or applies for Medicaid,( you do not meed welfare to get Medicaid), it will be paid for.
I wish him the best, and will send a prayer out for him right now, because I really understand.

Way in the back of your throat are your tonsils — one on the right and one on the left. These two balls of tissue are part of your body's infection-fighting system to keep you from getting sick. But what happens if these infection fighters get infected? Then you have tonsillitis (say: tahn-sul-lye-tus).
What Are Tonsils?
The tonsils' job is to catch germs before they cause infections in the throat, mouth, or sinuses. Usually, tonsils do their job well. But sometimes bacteria or viruses get into the tonsils. When this happens, you have tonsillitis.
How Can I Tell if I Have Tonsillitis?
If you have tonsillitis, your throat usually hurts and it's hard to eat or drink or even swallow. You may also have a fever. Here are some other signs that bacteria or a virus is infecting your tonsils:
redder-than-normal tonsils
a yellow or white coating on the tonsils
a funny-sounding voice
swollen glands in the neck
fever
bad breath
What Will the Doctor Do?
The doctor will ask you how you've been feeling and then look at your tonsils. He or she will probably use a wooden stick called a tongue depressor to help hold your tongue down to get a good look at what's going on in there.
The doctor might also look into your nose and ears, listen to your chest, and look for other signs of infection. Both bacteria or a virus can cause tonsillitis. It's important for your doctor to know if it's strep. Strep is short for streptococci (say: strep-toh-kah-kye) bacteria. If you have this kind of infection, you need special treatment.
To check for strep, the doctor will use a long cotton swab to swipe the back of your throat. This test doesn't hurt, but it might make you gag. It's called a throat culture. It usually takes 1–2 days to get the results, but some doctors will do a similar test called a rapid strep test. Within minutes, this test will tell your doctor if there are any strep bacteria in your throat.
How Is Tonsillitis Treated?
If the tonsillitis is caused by strep bacteria, the doctor will prescribe antibiotics, a type of medicine that kills bacteria. It's very important to take the antibiotics exactly as you're supposed to and finish the entire prescription to kill all the bacteria.
If the tonsillitis is caused by a virus, antibiotics won't work and your body will fight off the infection on its own. Sometimes kids get an operation to remove their tonsils, but only if their tonsils get infected a lot during the year or are so big they make it hard for the kid to breathe at night.
If you get tonsillitis, here are some tips that can help you feel better:
Drink plenty of fluids.
Eat smooth foods, including flavored gelatin, soups, ice-pops, and applesauce.
Avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods.
Use a cool-mist vaporizer or humidifier in the room where you spend the most time.
Rest.
Soon your tonsils will be back in action and ready to fight germs again!
Here is some tips about home remedy:
1. Use some baking soda in warm water to gargle the throat every day
2. honey and lime is good
3. Crush garlic and eat or used it to make a tea without sugar and drink.
4. Or use some vinegar and lime to gargle the throat.

Tonsils are not removed as much now as in the past. Your friend needs to go to doctor now. This is not normal. An untreated infection could cause heart problems like endocarditis or even kidney failure. Both of these suck and could possibly kill. Tell him to find a local clinic, he or she may not even have to pay a dime. Move fast. Dont be fooled by thinking this may be a virus, a virus wont last two months, a bacterial infection will

Sounds like he needs to have them removed. I strongly suggest if there's a free clinic in your area that he go because it will only get worse if he doesn't take care of himself. If he doesn't take care of it he could have breathing problems, sleep problems, eating problems, chronic infections, the list goes on and on. He should really take care of it before it causes him more problems than he has now, ie missing work, getting sicker, etc. There's an old saying "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". In other words it will be less expensive to remove them then something more serious happening in the future. When I had my tonsils I was constantly sick, but since I've had them removed I haven't had a bad sore throat or any of the illinesses I did when I had my tonsils. Good luck.

Know the asteroid wellhead tonsil stones them for many years and it's been title not eventually.
Best decision I've ever made! I was shocked by the way of getting out the stones out. It was so easy, but more importantly, painless. I really liked the little trick he had for preventing gag reflex. He have one happy customer here.

with upper respiratory virus, you might be mouth breathing in your sleep which in turn drys and irritates your throat which causes the swelling. Do you snore when you sleep or wake up with a dry mouth? These are symptoms of mouth breathing. Is your nose stuffy sometimes? It might not be a virus but an allergy to something you are in contact with a lot. maybe dust mites in your room, or the cat(if you have one). It is best to go to the same doctor when you are having problems so they can see that the condition is on going and not a new thing. Go back to the last one you went to and suggest the things I mentioned and see what kind of answers you get. Can't hurt.
