i have always wondered how to get training and license to fly a small aircraft I now live in fredericksburg VA and would like some ideas

i have looked into it in another state and in that state they said it would cost over $2000.00 to accomplish

Go to your local airport and look for the "fixed base operator" that works there. If you're near a large international airport you may want to drive out a bit to a smaller one that will be a little less intimidating.
A FBO (fixed base operator) is like a combo car rental/gas station/driving school, but for aircraft. Nearly every airport in the world has one. Most FBOs have a pilot training program. But beware! Becoming a pilot is expensive. Expect to spend $4,000 as a minimum for your first certification and another $2,000 to upgrade so that you are able to fly at night. And those are minimum numbers! Flight instruction is expensive, as is buying or renting a plane and keeping gas in it. Aviation fuel is a bit more expensive than auto fuel for your car.

You will have to pass a written exam before you are licensed and take lessons. You will train with an instrucotr and when he/she thinks you are ready you will take it up solo. Eventually you you go for a licensing exam.
This license will permit you to floy a single engine plane with fixed weel, during daylight hours, when the weather permit VFR (Visual FLight Rules) For each step there is further training and exams; retractible wheels, Instrument Rating, etc.

Drive to a small airport nearby and ask about flight school, there is almost always some kind of school going on and they'll rent you a plane and instructor

Your local small airport is the best place to start.You should be able to get an introductory lesson for under 50 bucks.From there they'll tell you everything you need to know.

Go to the nearest airfield, not a big airport...Most places have people who can give you lessons. I know my bro use to live in Newport News, dont know if that's near you, but he got his fixed wings license there and his commuter when he got back to California...
