Because it is also the simplest possible thing to say. The main reason is our mindset.

Take for instance, you accidentally bump into a stranger or a neighbor, causing him/her to drop something or to fall. What's the first automatic reaction? It would be (usually) "Oh, I'm so sorry! Are you OK?", followed by helping the person up etc.

Now, in another scenario, you might have quarrel with a friend, called him or her nasty names, or might have embarrassed them publicly. You bump into them the next day, or got stuck together with that person alone in an elevator. Would you say sorry as readily as you would have in the first situation?

Most likely, you won't. Because firstly, the familiarity of the person to you makes it uncomfortable to do so, where to say sorry to someone you are less acquainted with is easier because you know they won't take it too seriously for any transgressions or mistakes you might have committed unwittingly against them.

But to someone you are close to or very familiar with, its more difficult, because maybe you have to see or communicate with that person on a regular basis. Sorry in this case, is much more intimate and serious. An average human being generally has a natural aversion to apologizing, especially to someone we are familiar with (doubly so if its a family member, a spouse, or someone who we share an intimate relationship with).

Most people, if given half the chance, would prefer not to apologize for a mistake they have made, and would rather let that mistake be forgotten through the passing of time, or hoping that the person would forget about the offending episode.

Sorry is one of the hardest words because people don't like to admit they were wrong. They know they hurt the persons feelings and they feel bad about it and don't want to admit they did something wrong. They'd rather just forget about it and move on.

Because when we say it we admit we were wrong. And nobody likes to be wrong. We all want to be right about everything all the time. I know I'm always right :)

But seriously, it's hard to accept the idea that maybe, just maybe, we messed up and we should try fixing the mess instead of pretending it's everyone else's fault.

Cheers!

I think saying "sorry" to someone is hard to say because it is saying, "I was wrong. I did the wrong thing and I want you to forgive me." You can never be wrong when it is in your mind that you are right. You could say that the sky is orange and beleive that until your dying day but you are still wrong. You have to say your sorry in order for everyone to know that you were wrong.

What are you sorry for Yukiko? From the sound of what I think you're sorry about... you didn't do anything wrong.

You've read what I had to say, you've looked at my myspace... now write to me. Lets talk. You sound like such an awesome person. I'd like to know you.

Because people feel they are losing their sense of pride when they say sorry, admitting fault. People don't like being wrong, especially admitting it. But in the end, saying sorry makes you a better/stronger individual, knowing we are all capable of faults. :)

Because we let the person know that in spite our pride we are human enough to let them be right.
