With out the people there is no mission, with out the mission there are no people.
In the nature of military ways the mission takes center stage, the out come of that mission is dependent upon the people. Therefore take care of the people that take care of the mission and the mission will be taken care of. Some times it is better to live and fight another day, at other times there is no choice to stand and fight regardless. Your question is very opened to opinions and beliefs, and ultimately could only be answered knowing what the exact mission entails. In the end win at all costs!

yes, but acording to you the mission is what will be benifiting the people. so, acording to you, the people are the end result that you are trying to help. if there is very strong evidence that the mission will have a lasting positive effect on the people i agree with you. if it is uncertain, or there is signifigant harm to the people in the compleation of the mission then i think the mission becomes a bad idea. it all logic
To above answerer. it seem interesting that all republicans say is freedom isn't free. when they are the ones you wont pay a dime to help the government. they are all for lower taxes yet they spend more money. this you cant denei.
also the war is not helping freedom, it actually creating more terrorists
aanswerer below, your unwaivering faith in the decisions of the militery is frightening. if they wanted to kill 100,000 people to save one life that seems like its not benifiting the people

"Missio Imprimis, Homines Sempre"
Translated from the Latin..... Mission First, People Always. It was one of the first things I learned as an army officer (except they taught it in English).
To me it's rather clear. The mission has to be completed....but always take into consideration the methods you employ to meet the mission on the people you lead. Without their ultimate support, and in the military perhaps ultimate sacrifice; the mission will never be completed.
And the worst possible outcome? Failure of the mission and the wasteful use of those under your command.
Just my view.....
A note to ERIC B... regarding your comment about the Republicans spending all the money?
When JFK became president the defense budget was less than 25% of the national budget. In the short time of his tenure it sky rocketed to over 45% of the national budget. And in all the time between it is now about 55%. Let's remember who started the defense spending spree shall we?
Thanks....

Depends, the mission if completing the mission will gain greater benefits to the people then directly helping the people...
But if the mission is like rescueing one person out of a war torn country and there is a group thats follow that one person...
I would rather rescue the group then complete my mission by saving that one person..
So it depends on the mission..

I say the people. Especially if the mission is not for the benefit of the people. Check THIS out about the mission in Iraq!...

I'd have to agree, the Mission is in the benefit of the people. Lives are lost in War, that's just a fact of History whether someone agrees or not. This is why there are days of remembrance in the worlds tradition, to honor those who sacrificed, intentionally or otherwise for freedoms cause.
The War critics are those who do not feel freedom is worth any sacrifice. They are content to go quietly into the night when the enemy comes.

You can probably answer your own question if you understand where and why this was written
http://www.hunt101.com/img/436996.jpg
(Hint) it was written on the top of a case of beer
quote
iraq51
"And the worst possible outcome? Failure of the mission and the wasteful use of those under your command."
The message on the case of beer was to the returning solders from the failed Iran Hostage mission,,, and 8 solders died on that mission because the mission failed.
