The way I did it was I put catnip on the scatching post, and now that's all he ever uses. He use to scratch up my furniture,,which was not good.I did try everything to stop him but this was the best way that I found to stop him from scratching where I didn't want him to scratch.

I'm having this same problem right now. This is what I am doing, which my mother (who has owned cats her whole life) told me.

Put the post near where the cat scratches. Rub some catnip into it to attract him to it. Whenever you catch him scratching somewhere else, firmly say "No" and then rub his paws on the post instead. Whenever you catch him at the post, praise him.

It takes time! Good luck!

Play around and on the scratching post with a toy. A string or one of the little toys on a stick used to tease cats. That way he will get the feel of it on his feet and claws. and learn to like it. He will be hunting and stalking the string or toy an at the same time touching the scratch post so it will learn not to be afraid of it.
Maybe catnip on it if he likes catnip.
Hope I helped.

Rub lots of catnip on the post. Everytime you catch him scratching the door frame, pick him up and move him to the post.

Simple :) Rub catnip up and down the scratching post, it'll give you a peace of mind and him a cracked out hobby to begin!

I showed him that the post is supposed to be scratched on by scratching it lightly myself. Then, I made his paws touch it until he is familiar with it. I did it a couple of times until about 3-5 times after, he was able to do it by himself already. My kitty was only about 2 months old when I taught him that.

to teach--- if it scratches sofa... 'NOOOOOOO'. let it know this is wrong and then take to cat post and place catnip on. Kind of a reward thing.. cat will get the idea and then in future always place more catnip on a somewhat routine basis

Get a catnip spray or rub some dry catnip on the post. You can also try rubbing your cats paws on the post to put his scent on it...If the post smells to "new" to him he may be less likely to use it.

make sure the post has cat nip, or buy some and sprinkle it on. every time you catch him scratching, quickly move him to the post.

also, buy a spray called "no scratch" and spary it where you don't want him to scratch. it has no smell to humans but cats hate it, and it is safe for fabrics and surfaces.

rub catnip on all the scratching posts and show kitty some in your hand and lead it to the post.
