Fewer children would know their fathers. Women would murder more men. Most male musicians would be homeless. Geneology would be a lot more complicated. Churches would have less money. There would be no banquet halls. Life insurance would be completely different and much more expensive and auto insurance premiums for males would never get cheaper. Jewelers and florists wouldn't make nearly so much money. Neither would Hallmark.
There's probably more, but right now I need to go kiss my wife softly on the cheek as she sleeps because I'm glad she's my wife. Keep dreaming.

Marriage is the foundation of healthy families, and healthy families are the foundation of a healthy society. Why do you suppose governments give tax breaks and other incentives to families? Out of the goodness of their hearts? No, it is to encourage families which form the infrastructure of the society. Some countries are now paying couples to have children because the birth rate is so low that their populations are no longer stable. Such countries, which include most of the nations of Europe, are actually dying out, each generation becoming smaller than the last, partially due to birth control and partially due to abortion. Another effect of this trend is that countries like Spain and France, which have always been strongholds of Christianity are being forced to take in large numbers of immigrants just to fill essential jobs. And guess where most of those immigrants are coming from? The Middle East; and Muslims, unlike many nominal Christians, do not consider children a burden, and do not shy away from having large families. Within another couple of generations most of Europe may well be primarily Islamic.

Interesting question. Seems to me that marriage has come to be a definition of what do do with the stuff upon divorce rather than a decree of love and devotion. There would have to be some sort of contractual agreement for an equitable separation. Sad, I know. Society would adapt. Relationships would be easier in and out, and there would be even more single parent or split parent homes.

Perhaps we would revert to what we prob had in a more primitive time. Relationships of 5 years or so until the "in love" phase burned out and then we'd move on to the next person. Children would basically have no fathers, hopefully we'd evolve some kind of clubs or social male bonding/rites of passage to offset that.

I don't see it happening.

However it would likely result in people continuing to have relationships that are not solemnized. Most would be monogamous, but a few might go for polygamous relationships, which I expect would be considered legal under such an abolition.

If the family is the bed rock of society then marriage would be the bed rock of the family.

What would be the effect of the abolition of marriage? Collapse of human society as we know it today.

There would be even more children running around w/o a dad.

Some men, without marriage, would feel even less of a responsibility to put their family before themselves.

Marriage provides the framework for many of us to love others as we love ourselves, to be kind, patient, and forgiving. And, in the best of scenarios, to receive those things in return.

Can someone experience these things without being married? Sure, but it is more difficult.

peace

I think it wouldn't be as profound as you might think. But women would have a big say in this, and I think that marriage benefits women and children the most, so I doubt if it would ever disappear. Besides, marriage is not as much as a Christian concept as it is a legal one. Remember, all religions have marriage, and even atheists and agnostics get married.

Look at the gay community. Many people there form long-term bonds without the expectation of marriage.
