I am getting all four of my wisdom teeth out in a few days and i am a little nervous because my mouth will be numb but i'm not getting put out. Plus, they are apparently still partly attached to the bone so i'm going to have to hear them saw through bone. Anyone else been through this who can let me know what to expect?

When people ask for encouragement about getting their wisdom teeth out, I like to share this story about my three children.

I removed two of my older daughter's wisdom teeth at 2:00 in the afternoon and told her to go home and lie down until dinner time. Before I got home, she had already left for the mall! I was rather angry, because I figured that she'd be moaning all night long and asking me what to do for the pain. Much to my happy surprise, she seemed just fine. She said that she waited until the numbness started to go away and she felt pretty good, so she decided to get up and go.

Same thing with my son. We were actually headed home from a drum lesson and he asked if we could stop in the office to check out the sore place in his mouth. It turned out to be an erupting wisdom tooth. He asked if I felt like taking it out right then, so I did. (I was afraid he might change his mind if he thought about it overnight.) His mom didn't even know he had a wisdom tooth taken out until he had to take the gauze out of his mouth to eat dinner. His uppers were both kind of difficult and he had trouble healing with one of them (sinus involvement), but that didn't last for more than 3 or 4 days.

With my third child, I took her to the oral surgeon, because the roots were sort of close to the nerve and _I_ didn't want to be the one to cause her any trouble if things got difficult. She had nitrous oxide and little bit of iv sedation and had all four removed at once. I wanted to get her right home, but she asked me to stop off at the mall before we went home. She insisted that she was okay. Instead of going home and lying down, she walked through the mall. Yes, she was biting on her gauze packs (in the mall!), but still she was a lot more active than I would recommend. She had no trouble at all healing. I think she went out that night, too. (It was 1999, so I don't remember the details.)

I'm not saying that they are ALL like this, but there are wisdom teeth and then there are w*!`S^D@m TEETH!!! I always say that wisdom teeth (and root canals, by the way) are like teenagers. At least 90% are no trouble at all, but everybody talks about the bad ones.

Well, it hurts but they are probably going to give you a course of anesthetics followed by painkillers. While you are recovering at home you can distract yourself with the time-proven methods of sleep, watching TV, and reading a book.

If they say they will be giving you a general anesthetic, that means you will be unconscious during the procedure. If they are only giving you a local then you would be awake.

You probably will not have much pain immediately after surgery because the anesthetic will not have worn off yet. You probably also will not be able to drive yourself, if they give you a general. Not sure if you can drive or not if they just give you a local.

Your dentist/doc will most likely write you a prescription for a couple of day's worth of painkillers. Hopefully, you are taking a couple days off from work/school and can just lie in bed.

You won't be eating food right away and you have to follow all of your dentist's instructions for keeping the mouth clean. Your gums are some of the fastest growing tissue in the body and if you were to get some food in there the flesh would quickly grow over it due to the rapid rate the wounds will be healing. Then it would decompose, get infected, and form an abscess.

Because of the anesthetic followed by the painkillers, the pain from the extraction will not big deal, most likely. Yeah, it will hurt but so does skinning your knee, having the flu, or coughing too hard. You might want to verify with your dentist or oral surgeon that you will be getting something for the pain before you go in to have the teeth removed.

I am assuming you are in the US or Europe. In some countries, dentistry is performed by barbers. In that case, I am not sure what you can expect.

Check with your dentist to find out what you need to do, or should not try to do, in the aftermath of the extraction.

No. It hurts afterwards. So I've heard. I still have all four of mine and I'm 24 years old. They are all healthy and, I had a sealant put on them so they would stay that way. Some people need them pulled because they don't have enough room for them in their mouth. Some dentists want to pull them out because it's money in their pocket. My dad still has his and he is almost 60. His are in decent shape too. Most people I know were given the gas when they had it done so they don't remember anything. I unfortunately can't relate. Hope all goes well. From what I hear, the first two days are the worst. But, you get to eat a lot of ice cream!!!

I don't know what it is like if you are still awake, i hear it is horrible. So choose to be put to sleep, that is what i did to remove all 4 wisdom teeth and 2 extra molers and i didn't feel a thing and i also had no pain when i woke up either, apart from a headache on day 2 and 3, but it was nothing the meds couldn't fix.

don't stay awake for it and your dentist shouldn't even attempt to extract 4 teeth without putting you to sleep.

it depends on a couple of things. while they are being taken out, you will not feel a thing, they get you on good pain killers for that. after it is over you will have to bite on gause for a day or so, which is annoying. If they are just pulling the wisdom teeth out, then the pain will be gone in a couple of days and you woln't feel a thing with a couple asprin. if your wisdom teeth are impacted (turned sidways pushing on your molars) then they have to smash the wisdom teeth and pull the shards out, this is much more painful and heals slower. from the sound of it your getting the easy way.

I was put to sleep cause they were bone impacted too, when i woke up i was sleepy but ok. I took my pain meds for 3 days then i took Motrin for a few more. Its not that bad. I have a 2 1/2 and 1 1/2 year old and i took care of them like normal. Don't let people scare you. The only thing that sucked is that i got a dry socket ( i took Motrin )and couldn't eat for like 2 weeks besides soft food. You should do just fine. I was put to sleep cause the surgeon recommended it.

I never developed Wisdom teeth, but I do know it can be painful afterwards because they might stitch your gums etc. I'm sure they'll numb you really good, you probably wont even know whats going on and the dentist will talk to you to help keep your mind off the "sawing". I think the worst part is having your mouth open the entire time.

during the extraction it may or may not hurt when i got mine pulled out i woke up and felt a bit but you will feel pain after the surgery is over for a week or less you will feel pain however i suggest you extract all four wisdom teeth at one time because it is better to go through the pain at once rather then going through all of that 2,3,4 times

NO worries. once the anticeptics are in, you feel nothing. in fact, you can get a mirror from the doctor to WATCH yourself.
YES you will see lots of blood... BUT you won;t feel the pain at all. Go for the surgery in the evening
after food
brush teeth.
then go for it
after that, go to bed
the next day will be ok
