When my sister moved to a different town to go to school, she was kind of poor so I got a basket and loaded it with stuff for her birthday.
Tea
Coffee
Oreo's
Shampoo
Conditioner
Hairspray
Toilet paper
Deodorant
Tampons
Soap
Light-bulbs
everything I could possibly think of that she could run out of. She said it helped her stay in school when things were bleak.

Your Q has absolutely nothing to do with the category you submitted to, and I find that to be the case way too often.
That said however, the BEST I've ever GIVEN is "Thank You" in context because I meant it, for what I felt the gift was to me, from those I thanked. They GOT IT, by the way.
Best is relative and subjective, and sadly I assume you mean material gifts.

My boyfriend (now husband) went out of town with his family and had given me the keys to his apartment. While he was gone, I snuck in there and cleaned the whole place from top to bottom and stocked his refrigerator and pantry with all of his favorite foods. He had just moved in there, so I had also bought him a new garbage can filled with a George Foreman grill and lots of kitchen utensils and gadgets and a wok. I made him a giant card and put it on his couch so he could see it when he walked through the door. Needles to say, He loved it!

I once gave my parents a holiday package for my birthday. I know..its weird; giving away gift when it is your birthday.
I guess they need one after more than 20yrs taking care of me, and im not that easy to deal with. The gift was a token of appreciation for all their sacrifaction.
