Ahhh yes...this is a very complex question, with a very complex answer. Perhaps your Pa is telling you simply to stay aloof from the herd so you won't become too attached to them at slaughter time. Or maybe he believes in a Feng Shui existence and to drink downstream may interfere with the Chi in your life. Or maybe, just maybe, he's giving you a test to see if you're a "listen to Pa" kind of man, or a "find out for myself" kind of man. I think you should take charge of your destiny and find out for yourself by pushing the envelope, going against family tradition, and trying to drink downstream. Let us know how it turns out, and in the meantime, could you answer how your Pa also happens to be your cousin and brother? :-)

Literally, don't drink downstream from the herd because they will have urinated and defecated in the water and contaminated it.
Figuratively, it means get your information from fresh and unbiased sources and as close to first-hand as possible.
