A: odds are, most places like Dunkin Donuts offer the cops free coffe and donuts to sit inside. Why? Criminal drives up looking to use the store like a bank--i.e. to make a large cash withdrawal-- sees the cops and changes his/her mind.
B: in regards to the particular officers' area of responsibility in the city, the Dunkin could be centrally located
C: if it is 3 or 4 or 5 in the morning, would you rather have the officer up and awake talking with the clerk at the dunkin or a convenience store or whatever that is open or trying to fight off sleep behind a closed business?
D: the donut shop across the street was always trying to be nice and would give us a couple dozen donuts by dropping them at the front desk of the PD. Well, the cops really didn't want them, so the cops tried to be nice and would bring them to us in the communications center. There, about 20 or so donuts would sit for a couple days untouched until we threw them away cause we didn't want them either. In other words, it's an old, now mostly untrue cliche.

Donuts and cops are a stereotype that has been around forever. It has to do with the hours that places are open, along, with the location, convenience, and service. If you look hard enough you'll see all types of people that work odd hours at Dunkin Donuts, or any other restaraunt that is either open all hours or opens early, closes late. Not just police, but truck driver's, delivery drivers, factory workers, construction, etc.

Because working at Dunkin Doughnuts is very safe. Also, the cops are expected and will be given good service. Plus who doesn't like doughnuts?

Because there is not a Krispy Creme doughnut shop in the area.
They take breaks like everyone, and normally they get either discount or free doughnuts and almost always free coffee.
And normally they have clean bath rooms to use

It's a stereotype. Some hang out at White Hen or other places, but as a wife of a cop, let me help you see something.
Firemen when they don't have a call, get to hang out at the fire station, rest, read, fix up the place, work out, etc. You see firemen sitting in chairs outside and you wave as you walk by.
Police men, when they don't have a call, get to hang out in a smelly, old beat up cop car with a guy they spend 8 hours with and drive around the same blocks over and over again wearing really uncomfortable outfits/bullet proof vests.
So they will sometimes hang out at places to get out of their cars. People sometimes think they should be "doing their job" but they are. They're waiting for a call, but they don't have a firehouse to hang out at - they need to be out where the people are.
P.S. My husband hates coffee, and by the way, in my neighborhood, they hang out at Starbucks! :)

They can drink lots of coffee and it's usually very easy for them to get out if they need to. It's a whole lot more pleasant than being stuck in the car. It also creates a presence in the community. People joke about it but everyone knows where to find a cop if you need to talk to one without having to have them come to your home or you having to go to the station.

If the police officials are eating loose donuts it really is a coverage through the administration. No institution is obligated to furnish police officials loose food, espresso, etc. even if some places chosen to by using the indisputable fact that way if thugs see police officials soaring round then they received't get robbed. Its a small cost to pay to have police officials round, especially if a business enterprise is open previous due at evening. maximum thugs case places out and in the journey that they understand police officials are continually coming round, then it doesn't be a strong position to rob. through you suggesting on your buddy to spit on the donuts, it really is merely incorrect.

because donuts are a quick fix when cops are on call and might have to leave in a moments notice. Cant tell you how many times i have seen an officer try to eat and then had to leave their meal and go.
