We have a seven month old black lab that just started to go in heat, animal lovers that we are, we have had other animals, but males. We never experienced a female puppy before. I don't know what to expect this is about the fourth day and she is bleeding and not herself, she seems to be mopey and tonight she peed and pooped in the house, which is really not like her since she is house trained. Is this normal? Is this a common symptom when they go in heat to have accidents, or does it have something to do with attracting a male dog. She has also whimpered a couple of times. We have made an appointment to get her fixed, I'm just worried about her until her appointment comes, because I feel bad that she has to go through this because she seems like she is so miserable. Any advice is great and truly appreciated.

Hardcore animal lover and activist. Thank you in advance for all of your ansers

Yes what she is going through is normal. Shes probably scared not knowing what is happening to her body. You know you can get her spayed while she is in heat. I did with one of my dogs.

Not too much that you can do except be there for her. She's going through a lot of physical and emotional changes right now. You did the right thing waiting for her to have a heat before having her spayed. This way she can "grow up" and not be a puppy all her life. It's the best way. Also her body can change from the puppy stage (all her parts will grow right including her hips which is good in a Lab as they carry CHD) into the adult stage. Don't have her fixed until she's totally out of heat because the surgery is a lot riskier with all the blood vessels engorged around her uterus. And make sure she doesn't get out or anyone get in!!!

I think there may be a possiblity that she has a very bad urinary tract infection instead of being in heat. When she urinated in the house, was a good stream and a normal amount of urine? Or was it a little bit of urine mixed with blood. Is she trying to urinate more than usual? It's not impossible that she's in heat, but given that she seems to feel a little mopey, you might want to take her to your vet and have her checked out to make sure it's not something besides a heat cycle. A lot of clients that come to my clinic have mistaken a UTI for a heat cycle.

I always think of when a dog is in heat its like having your period. They do get moody and upset. I wouldn't be too worried about her attitude and when she gets more use to being in heat as she gets older the side effects will go away.
I always put a diaper on my dog when she is in heat that way she doesn't bleed all over the house.

Well, nothing you can really do...just let her go through with it and then have her fixed(make sure she's not in heat when you get her fixed). Some animals may act strange and moody when they're in heat...so, that's nothing to worry about.

Unfortunately, its all part of the cycle. Just like humans, they get crampy and bloted and moody. Just bear with it for now.
