First off, you can't control what other people think, or say. As my mom used to say, "People have to talk about something, and it's usually other people. If you're the topic of choice today, hang on - they'll move on to something else eventually."
So that said... the point is to know you don't deserve a bad reputation, so when the gossips decide you're Topic A for a while, which is bound to happen, everybody's in a position to say, "Her? That just doesn't sound like her." That's all about how you conduct yourself.
Date, as in "go to public place/event with male with intent to get to know better" whoever you like, so long as he's unattached. The worst anyone can say of you is "she goes out with a different man every week." Fine, if you're above board and everybody (including the guys) know you aren't quite ready to settle down yet (which you probably aren't, seeing as you're "newly single." Best to let a bit of dust settle first).
Sleep with? Better not, not until you meet someone you're pretty sure is The One and you're ready to be exclusive. Male or female, especially in a small town, sleeping around still raises eyebrows (and exposes you to a host of diseases that are, at least, no fun - I mean, if you sleep with a guy on date #2 or #3, how likely is it you're his First?).
If you keep the first dates with a new guy to public venues (the firefighter's pancake breakfast, the local coffee shop, etc.), the gossips won't have much to talk over, unless you make a practice of making out in public. Don't invite a new guy over to your place (or go to his) until you've had a few dates - if the biddies see you going slow and taking your time, they won't have much to discuss.
I've lived in small towns, and you can't prevent gossip, but you can starve it of anything to feed on, and still have fun. Good luck!

Well, you know if you're in a small town people will talk. Be prepared even if you go out on innocent dates. But, if you are out there getting sexually active with many different partners, be prepared to deal with it as well. If not, then you might want to think about moving or dating outside of your town.

Be a single, nice, small town gal that does not put out...but go out with a friend once in a while to a movie, supper and a drink later.

Go out but don't really "date" anyone right away. Hang out with friends and meet a lot of people and when you find a guy you really like then start dating him.
