I've meditated for years and it really really relaxes and refreshes you. Try to do it for 10-20 minutes as often as you can and you'll feel tons better.

I can tell you how to meditate, but actually doing it will be a bit hard at first.

Find a quiet place where you will be undisturbed.
Sit in a comfortable position ( sitting in a chair is best )
Close your eyes and take deep, slow measured breaths. breath from your diaphram (your gut)
some people chant the word Ommmmm slowly because the sound is a bit hypnotic and helps you relax, but its not necessary.
focus completely on your breathing. If you find your mind wandering, focus back on your chant word, or your breath.
let all your muscles relax completely, breathe repeat, continue etc.

when you breathe from your diaphram it works your internal organs, so not only is meditating cheap and relaxing, its healthy too :)

(as it was said earlier, a journal helps alot as well.)

Here's the cheapest form of stress relief I've ever found... and you probably have everything you need already right in your house.

Find a plain paper tablet. Lined or unlined, doesn't matter. Find a pen or some other writing utensil that won't make you stop to sharpen it. Now, don't think, just start to write. Don't worry about grammar, punctuation or spelling... just let it flow. Don't go back and read what you've written. Just write until your mind slows down and you stop writing.

What this does is allow you to keep your mind from looping and running over the same ol' thing over and over and over. You'll be amazed at what comes out when you're not really trying to thing about how to phrase things. And you don't have to share your thoughts with anyone else if you don't want to. Heck, you don't even have to read what you wrote if you don't want to!

Good luck!

Try mental imagery-

Visualize yourself taking that road trip, when you start feeling stressed. (hopefully you know the signs by now of when you reach that certain point)

Visualize yourself driving the car of your dreams, and use lots of imagery that makes you feel good, reminds you of good times. Combine the visualization with some slow, deep breathing.

Now imagine that all of your stress, all of your worries and all of your concerns are being zapped from your body. Feel each stress point release as if into thin air. As you feel the stress drain from your body return back to your picture of imagery. Relax there and deep breathe.

Imagery substitutes your actual experience with something much more ideal. It allows you a renewed sense of self-confidence to take on the stress of your life. During imagery, your body is relaxed and recharged. Your stress levels lessen and adrenaline disperses. It gives your mind and body a break over the stress having control and you have complete mastery over the mind and body for that time. Imagery is a great life balancer!

Free stress relievers:

*Count your blessings; one by one.
*Go for a long walk.
*Look at the sky. It shows you are a part of something bigger than you.
*Hot baths w/bubbles.
*Chocolate or ice cream (ok, not free, but reasonably affordable and accessible, which leads to the next one...)
*Exercise. Low impact/high repetition is most effective.
*Talk to confidants or friends.
*Talk to GOD (I highly recommend this one!)
*Escape in a good novel.
*Breathe! You're stressed. You'd be surprised to know that you are holding your breath much of the time or not breathing deeply.
*Know that this too shall pass. Then it will be something else, but THIS will pass.
*Don't take life personally. It is just hard. That is the nature of it for the perfecting of our souls. Heaven wouldn't be heaven if earth were a picnic. (I don't know how nonbelievers make it. If I didn't have faith, I'd have probably checked out by now. Hope you're a believer.)

Find a spot where you have peace and quiet. Absolute. And just soak it up. Every time you begin to think of what is causing the stress, tell yourself NO. I also have become so worn out that everything feels like this gigantic effort and any silence I can find, I am appreciative of. Good luck resolving the stress source.

Spend sometime with someone that you know cares about you, your grandma an aunt... tell them you need them.... Sometimes letting someone know how you feel... intriges them to be there for you... someone that makes you feel good... if you don't have that kind of person in you life... then the next best thing is time with yourself... as you get older you'll learn time alone sometimes is the best way to re-charge your battery. How can anyone relax or chill out with a bunch of commotion going on.

Depending on where you live and the weather: jet skiing works great for me! I own one but you can rent them pretty cheaply for the day. Swimming, jogging, walk the dog, go for a walk, snow skiing, snow shoeing, exercising, take up dancing or a martial art just get some kind of hobby something that you can do away from the everyday grind. Do something for you.

The best thing I do to help me get through times like that is EXERCISE. Intense exercise. I really like hot yoga (it involves your mind and body SO much you can't help but forget everything else), but it can be expensive.
